Man Accidentally Shoots Himself With Sawed-Off Shotgun At Port Authority

Authorities say that a man carrying a sawed-off shotgun inside a gym bag accidentally shot himself in the leg at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City on Saturday.

The 35-year-old Worcester, Massachusetts, man was waiting in line to board a bus at about 6:00 a.m. when his foot tapped his gym bag, triggering the weapon, Port Authority spokesman Joseph Pentangelo said.

According to NBC New York, the shotgun blast struck the man in his left calf,  Pentangelo said.

The unidentified man was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for a non-life threatening injury.

Pentangelo said that charges are pending against the man.

The gun reportedly survived the incident. There is no word on whether the man’s ego will recover, nor do we care.

Looks like Cuomo’s draconian new gun law didn’t work. Felons still obtain firearms – gthrough illegal means of course.

And you know he is a felon how??

      • Red Eye Robot November 3rd, 2014 at 08:05

How? he was in possession of a sawed off shotgun

        • rg9rts November 3rd, 2014 at 08:08

That does not make him a felon… and he was from Mass

          • Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 3rd, 2014 at 08:26

It is a Felony to have in your possession a sawed off shotgun. Dates back to the Firearms act of 1934.

            • rg9rts November 3rd, 2014 at 09:03

But if you paid attention….I know it is an effort…the discussion was about New York .., tough laws for purchase and it is assumed that at least in the United States where I live…..you are innocent till proven guilty…Think about that before flapping your gums

              • Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 3rd, 2014 at 09:27

Actually, if you would have looked up what the Federal Firearms Act of 1934 before trying to ridicule me. You would have discovered it is a FEDERAL law, encompassing all 50 states.

So what was that about “Flapping my Gums”

“That does not make him a felon… and he was from Mass”

Just a FYI, having it in his possession is a felony crime. Whether he is from Mass, New York, or the deep interior of the planet “Uranus” !!!!

You have a long history of flapping your USELESS gums on this site over gun nut issues,,, And he is STILL INNOCENT sort of skipped that part …but that is the bagger way

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I like that… You make me laugh….

I will give you this. Because the article does not mention his name, so we cannot research him. So we shall call him “Innocent” at his moment. But I will place a wager with you, or a just a gentleman’s bet. That as soon as we find out his name, I guarantee you there is a record and that he is a prohibited person.

Breaking federal, state, and local laws by merely having in ones possession a sawed off shotgun, is not going to be the actions of a citizen who is trying to be legal under the law. Care to place the wager ???

Charged with a felony is not the same as being convicted of a felony.

Massachusetts has a very strict permitting scheme very similar to that of New Jersey. New York as well. transporting firearms across state lines has very strict rules to abide by. This “Person” was breaking all sorts of Federal and state firearm laws.

I am pretty sure that somebody who is willing to transport a “Loaded” firearm through New York, one that is Highly illegal, and cross over state lines. Is probably not going to be legal to begin with.

But for arguments sake, I will give you “Innocent until proven guilty”… To bad we cant do the same for all of those accused of something that is reported here. Like that Teacher in North Carolina from last week.

I submitted a follow up story, hopefully it gets posted.

Just because some will continue to break (whatever) law, doesn’t mean there should be no laws.

Probably safe to say, that he was an illegal gun owner to begin with.

In the US, the Beareau of Alcohol Tobbaco and Firearms (in their infinite wisdom) decided that shotguns under 26 inches in overall length or with a barrel les than 18 inches shall serve no sporting purpose. Thus they became heavily restricted under the 1934 NFA laws. Some states took the law further and denied their residents the abilty to make, own, or register such a shotgun.

ohhh and PS: something smells real fishy about this part of the story. Weapons do not discharge that easy. I am thinking more to this story…

“Port Authority spokesman Joseph Pentangelo says the man was waiting in line to board a bus at about 6 a.m. Saturday when his foot came into contact with the gym bag, triggering the weapon.”

    • Bunya November 3rd, 2014 at 13:45

I’m not too sure about that. I remember reading where a guy, who was driving with his dog in tow, had a loaded gun laying on the passenger seat. The dog jumped from the back seat to the front, landing on the gun, discharging it, and hitting the driver. Now I live in Chicago, have been driving for over 30 years, and have never felt I needed a firearm on/near my person when driving – but that’s just me.

I think this story highlights an important point. As Susie points out, there is a long-standing federal law against owning or possessing a sawed off shotgun. A federal law prohibits you from modifying your legal firearm which is your personal property.

This is why I cringe when the gun fetishists bleat about “infringement”. Open carry laws are no different than laws concerning the modification of firearms. They dictate how your weapon is to be handled in public, as a matter of safety.

Laws that restrict or prohibit open carry are no more an infringement on 2nd amendment rights than the laws which criminalize the act of sawing off the barrel of your own shotgun.

That is my primary beef with the NRA and its supporters. Their dishonest hysteria about “infringement” immediately puts a halt to any rational discussion about how best to insure public safety.

I wonder where he was going that he felt he needed a sawed off shotgun, popular with crooks because it is easy to conceal under a coat.
