Gov Scott Walker Runs Ad Supporting Equal Pay After Repealing Wisconsin’s Equal Pay Law

Posted by | October 29, 2014 08:30 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories

Voters tend to suffer from short term memory loss on voting day and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) is counting on that. Walker released an ad on Tuesday in which his female lieutenant governor applauds his support for equal pay for women — just two years after the governor signed a bill repealing the state’s equal pay law, the Huffington Post reports.

“Under Scott Walker, workplace discrimination will always be illegal for any reason,” Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch says in the ad. “Mary Burke wants to create more opportunities to sue. We want to create more opportunities for women to succeed.”

Burke is popular with female voters and the two are in a close race.

Walker quietly signed a measure in 2012 that repealed Wisconsin’s Equal Pay Enforcement Act.

Naturally, Republicans applauded the repeal. “It’s an underreported problem, but a huge number of discrimination claims are baseless,” state Sen. Glenn Grothman (R) said.

The Huffington Post reports, “But the equal pay law appears to have been effective. Between 2009, when the law was signed, and 2010, Wisconsin women saw a 3 percent spike in median income measured as a percentage of male earnings. In the two years the law was in place, not one pay discrimination lawsuit was filed, and Wisconsin rose from 36th to 24th in the rankings of states with the best ratio of female to male pay.”

In contrast, after Walker repealed the legislation, Wisconsin dropped to 25th in wage gap rankings, according to 2013 data.

Watch:

There are other issues Walker will have to face. He failed to create 250,000 jobs, as promised. A recent study found that some 700,000 workers in Wisconsin are earning poverty-level wages. The governor has said he wants to create jobs that pay more than the minimum wage, but he also recently said that the minimum wage doesn’t serve a purpose, according to MSNBC.

Walker has always been a buffoon, now you can add being absent minded to that definition of him as well.

More like bald faced liar than absent minded.

I am not. But, on a relative basis, he’s a close to a moderate as they have, so we won’t have to endure him for too long as the other’s grab for the steering wheel of the klown kar.

Who’s stupid enough to say they support Equal Pay while their own administration is paying women less than men doing the same job?

    Oh…

    • tracey marie October 29th, 2014 at 13:25

        What’s not true?

        • Kick Frenzy October 29th, 2014 at 15:19

The report about the White House paying women less than men.
The truth to that is that only compares median pay for all employees, broken down into male/female.
What it doesn’t account for is what type of jobs are held by either group.
When you dig further into the issue, it turns out women hold the majority of lower level jobs while men hold the majority of senoir level jobs.

In other words, it’s not a disparity of women paid less for the same work, which is the point of fair pay.
Whether or not women are held back from higher level positions is another question altogether.

          • R.J. Carter October 29th, 2014 at 15:34

That sounds exactly like the explanation that private businesses have given for their gender disparity gaps — seniority and position.

            • Kick Frenzy October 29th, 2014 at 16:11

Except that a lot of those businesses also have a pay disparity for men and women working the same job, as far as I know.
