CostCo To Close On Thanksgiving Because Workers ‘Deserve’ To Be With Their Families’

This gives 127,000 people the opportunity to observe Thanksgiving with their families.

In explaining why it decided to stay closed, the spokesperson said, “Our employees work especially hard during the holiday season and we simply believe that they deserve the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving with their families. Nothing more complicated than that.”

That makes at least five chain stores that have decided to resist the new trend of beginning Black Friday sales a day early, thus ensuring that a large number of employees will have to come to work. Dillard’s, Burlington, REI, and American Girl all told ThinkProgress they will remain closed on the holiday, and Dillard’s explained that its decision was part of its “longstanding tradition of honoring of our customers’ and associates’ time with family.”

Other stores have let the holiday shopping craze creep into workers’ Thanksgiving meal time. Macy’s announced this year that it will open at 6 p.m. on the holiday, while Walmart will be open all day, requiring nearly 1 million people to show up to work. The trend really took off last year, with at least 12 major brands deciding to open on Thanksgiving itself and thus require at least some people to be at work during mealtime.[su_left_ad]

It wouldn’t be an issue if people who didn’t want to spend time with their families didn’t go out shopping then. The companies and the customers share the blame equally.

I don’t think I have ever been in a store on Thanksgiving in my life but I have made a raid on gas stations on Christmas day when we needed batteries.

My grown daughter and I went to do Black Friday ONCE just because we wanted to see what all the fuss was about, we only went to one store then went home, never again!
We got stuck in a pile of people and could not get out so my daughter screamed, “OMG, who farted? OMG, how nasty, how dare you!” The seas parted and we ran out LOL! AND she is a scientist! That makes it even funnier.

Only the public can punish the stores who elect to open on Thanksgiving, if the stores see a rise in sales it will encourage others to follow suit. It’s as simple as that.

I dropped my Sam’s club card for Costco long ago. One more good reason why.

WallyWorld is demonstrative of the Republicanization of America. They don’t value their employees to pay them a living wage, and they don’t even allow their employees a day off to spend Thanksgiving with their families.

And use SNAP and medicaid as benefit substitutes

Don’t go shopping on Thanksgiving If you do not support stores being open.
    Just dont go shopping.
Stores losing money is the only thing that will deter them from opening.

    • Suzanne McFly October 26th, 2014 at 14:29

If people feel the need to shop, do it online, you will get a lot of discounts there as well and no one has to be working that day for you to shop.

When I worked in retail, it was not Thanksgiving I dreaded.
It was the day after…”Black Friday” and the start of “The Silly Season.”
Where my life-and-safety were often suborned just to make the store a few more pennies…and the customers knew this as well as I did.
Glad I’m no longer in that racket.
(And good for Costco for putting family time over winning sales!)
