GOP Rep: Big Government Causes Suicide

Alaska Congressman Don Young says the government is responsible for suicides because it gives people stuff and takes away their self-worth. According to the Alaska Dispatch:

Young on Wednesday wasn’t backing down from statements he made Tuesday at Wasilla High School that suicide shows a lack of support from friends and family…

A Wasilla High School student committed suicide last week.

Asked about the “lack of support” comment, Young expanded on it and added that suicide in Alaska didn’t exist before “government largesse” gave residents an entitlement mentality, according to an audio recording of his senior center appearance.

He also criticized school administrators for supporting students who disrespected him and said he refused to “coddle” them.

The audio was provided to Alaska Dispatch News by the campaign office of Forrest Dunbar, Young’s Democratic rival for his 22nd term.

The 81-year-old Young is the longest-serving Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives, with a reputation for ornery behavior and brash language.

    I think it’s time for the longest serving republican in the house to be put out to pasture. And speaking of government largesse, how’re those healthcare bennies going for you, Mr. Young?

    As usual, the truth is exactly the opposite of the right wing rhetoric;

    Funny how he has no problem criticizing others when he has been on the government dole for decades.

      Considering how much work congressmen actually get done, any pay they get would have to be considered a handout. In other words, welfare.

        Exactly, but their welfare check is a lot higher than any I have ever seen.

    So, Don, you are the prime example of your thesis. We can count on you to lead by example, sometime soon?

    Young is a hypocrite. He receives a check in the Fall of every year that represents his share of the state’s yearly oil profits. This is socialism in action. I don’t think he has refused to cash any of the checks he received while he rants against the evils of “government largesse. Plus, he’s made his living from the federal government’s largesse for 41 years. If he thinks benefiting from the government’s largesse is such a problem, he would represent the people of Alaska without accepting remuneration.

    The AK State Constitution stipulates that all of the state’s resources belong to the state’s citizens, just as it also stipulates that certain areas of AK, like Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, is under federal control. Politicians in states where certain land belongs to the federal government, but who want the state to control it, know the reason for this is contained in their states’ constitutions. When they speak of federal overreach on this issue, they know they’re lying. It was a condition of their being accepted for statehood and is mandated in their state constitutions.

    Over the course of my 30+ year career in teaching high school, I lost quite a few of my students to suicide. Most of them had very supportive and concerned families and friends, but for some reason, they chose to end their lives. Young is a prick who lacks the ability to empathize with others, and it shows in his callous comments and refusal to back down after making very disparaging comments in a venue with students who are still hurting from losing one of their classmates.
