Pope Calls For Acceptance Of Gays, Unmarried Couples, Divorced

Posted by | October 13, 2014 19:23 | Filed under: Politics Religion Top Stories

Pope Francis called for more acceptance of gays, couples who are unmarried, and those who are divorced. The call comes via a document put out by an assembly of Catholic bishops.

The bishops’ report, released midway through a landmark two-week meeting, does not change Roman Catholic doctrine or teaching, and will now be subjected to fierce debate and revision at the assembly.

But it is the first signal that the institutional church may follow the direction Francis has set in the first 18 months of his papacy, away from condemnation of unconventional family situations and toward understanding, openness and mercy.

He is the first Pope who is TRULY wanting to emulate Christ as much as he can, and God bless him for it!

Exactly, Christ didn’t chastise but the church has. I hope this Pope continues to embrace the diversity in the church.

I’m not in the least religious (not anymore), but even I have to say amen to that.

I think, personally, he has no choice. Divorce and gay acceptance is becoming commonplace among Catholics. He’s gonna have to make some concessions if he wants to keep the parishioners (and their money) coming to church.
Francis seems to be leaning liberal, which is a good thing, but I still don’t trust him.

    • burqa October 13th, 2014 at 22:12

I don’t think there are powerful, active, gay and divorce lobbies who can force the Pope to do anything.
This is a good news story. It would be nice if people could keep the positive vibe going rather than try to stamp it out by introducing negativity.

Solid point, and yet….well, you know there will be the “Yeah, but…” crowd coming in.

Let’s put it this way, I’m a bit more cautious than most. For example, Hitler was considered the greatest thing to happen to Germany in the early ’30’s, until the people discovered he wasn’t. Everybody hailed Dubya as the next greatest war hero in the “war on terror” and all he managed to do was kill thousands and leave a country in disrepair.

So excuse me if I don’t applaud this new pope. The Catholic church has a lot of skeletons in it’s closet, and no amount of feet washing, baby kissing and pandering to parishioners is going to wash away centuries of abuse.

As an Anglican (Episcopalian specifically) I am overjoyed at this news! I hope the leaders of my sister faith can adapt to the times.

    Once more, the Pope
(The Holy See, the Leader of The Universal Church, The Infallible Representative of the Christian Faith)
slaps down Bill Donahue and The Catholic League. Nothing like a little liberal love to put right wing religiousness in its place.
