Democratic Senator Stands Up To White House On War Powers Act

Posted by | October 6, 2014 09:58 | Filed under: Politics Top Stories War & Peace

Virginia Senator Tim Kaine has prevailed upon President Obama to invoke the War Powers Act, but without success.

The militants of the Islamic State were pouring across the Syrian border into Iraq, and seizing cities where so much American blood and treasure had been spilled. But Mr. Kaine said he told the president in no uncertain terms that if he intended to go to war, he would have to ask Congress’s permission. President Obama politely but firmly disagreed.

They have been battling ever since…

The chairmen of the House Foreign Affairs and Senate Foreign Relations Committees say they are in no rush to move forward. And the Obama administration continues to insist it has all the authority it needs from the 2001 authorization for the use of military force against Al Qaeda after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

“I could not disagree more,” Mr. Kaine said, adding, “you don’t ask people to sacrifice their lives until the nation has debated and committed to the mission. It’s immoral.”

I think it’s a pretty damn good idea to inform the people just why the hell we aren’t using our full military powers first, instead of going into a meatgrinder for our troops? Might want to show the American people a list of those who support such tactics while maintaining offshore bank accounts with no US accountability also. Just so they’ll know why the ‘military objectives’ are to sustain long term US Casualties.

I am glad to see Tim Kaine standing up for what he thinks is right. We do need to question what we are doing and why. Healthy debate is good for America. The President does have authorization to do what he is doing though, at least so far. Let’s keep the debate going and stand behind the president at the same time. There is no reason to just stop what we are doing so we can debate about what we are doing. Time is of the essence and doing nothing can allow the enemy to strengthen.

“The President does have authorization to do what he is doing though,” that’s the President’s assertion and Keane’s contention is otherwise. As we have an absent, and silent, Congress, there is no debate. War is a serious matter, people will be killed, maimed and injured and it deserves our full attention.

But, we have a do nothing Congress and a country being lied to by the entire media structure about the war’s necessity. Is ISIS our enemy? Are they? Or, are they brutal local actors making very public attempts to draw us in and become our enemies? Must we look at every political situation and see nails to pound with our military hammers?

    Politico:

“Less than two months after President Barack Obama’s administration called for repeal of the Congressional authorization for the 2002 Iraq war, he is formally citing the 12-year-old measure as a basis for newly expanded airstrikes against the Islamic State”

“National Security Adviser Susan Rice wrote to House Speaker John Boehner in July to urge Congress to rescind the law. She called the Iraq War resolution outdated and said the White House had no plans to rely on it.”

Sen. Keane is correct, there must be a meaningful debate on this and not the sham talking head commentariat blatherings that we are getting now on our media. Pick your channel, get your opinion, take your position. It’s beyond shameful that we, as a nation, care so little that Congress can be absent from its duties. Let’s just bomb brown people while we pretend to care about the issues involved. They’re far away after all and we get all those really cool black and white videos of stuff being blown up!

To be honest I don’t know what to think about this… I felt strongly from the very beginning, Congress should have been involved in a debate over this CRITICAL issue… I’m disgusted by the way Congress (both sides) just, up and ran away! In fact they left early. And now we have people from both sides of the isle saying “The President should call Congress back into session to debate this” knowing THAT wasn’t going to happen. I’m not too happy that the Pres. keeps saying he doesn’t need permission to go to war… IMHO the President should always get Congressional approval to go to war… What if John McCain and Sarah Palin were running this country? How many Countries would we have bombed by now? I’m disgusted with the entire Government over this!! I call BS on most if not all of Congress… when it is obvious they don’t want to go on record over this! AND they want to wait until AFTER the elections… Makes me sick how fast they ran…
