13-Year-Old Texas Girl Shoots, Kills Older Brother While Playing With A Gun

A 13-year-old Texas girl shot and killed her 22-year-old brother in what police describe as an accident.

The shooting occurred on Friday night at the family’s home in northeast Houston, according to KHOU.

The victim invited a friend into the home and the two began playing with a gun, according to reports. The two were allegedly drinking at the time.

It hasn’t been revealed as to how the girl came into possession of the gun, but it fired and struck the victim.

The victim was identified as Gregory Higdon. His mother says he was her only son, according to ABC 13.

He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The romanticization of gun ownership, as well as lax laws with an emphasis on ‘guns everywhere’ is certainly complicit in this tragedy. Alcohol and guns do not mix. Neither do children and guns. Gun safes and trigger locks are a thing. If only the brother had a gun, too. Oh that’s right, he did.

It may seem heartless to call for prosecution of the adults responsible for this but unless a harsh sentence is meted out nothing much will change.

Convict both parents of “Felony failure to show some common fracking sense”, and take away their right to own firearms permanently.

    Was it an accident?

    • crc3 September 28th, 2014 at 15:12

Does it matter? Someone died again because of a gun…

      • juicyfruityyy September 28th, 2014 at 15:15

The question is more to: was there a reason for the trigger to be pulled? This will make a difference in the out-come.

It was another accident, the brother and friend were drunk, left the gun on the table and were not paying attention.

          • juicyfruityyy September 28th, 2014 at 15:44

Not saying is wasn’t an accident. But she wasn’t 4. She was 13. She knows that pulling a trigger can have some consequences.

The Chronicle says he was showing his sister how to take it apart. It doesn’t mention drinking, or that she had the gun. However it happened, how do all these “responsible gun owners” happen to keep their guns loaded? I don’t have any guns, only fired one in the service, but I know the first rule is to assume any gun is loaded, and act accordingly.

Smartguns save lives preventing most of these tragedies caused by loaded gun owner failures further proving ‘gun owners shoot 22-43 times more friends and family than any intruder.75,000+ are injured by guns in the US annually.’-CDC/FBI. 2011’s 32,193 growing US gun deaths were 154 less than traffic fatalities. US gun deaths exceed traffic deaths by 2015. http://www.nhtsa.gov/NCSA 2014 traffic deaths fell -4.9% in Q1-14 http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-12-19/american-gun-deaths-to-exceed-traffic-fatalities-by-2015.html
