Arizona GOP Vice-Chair Resigns Over Remarks On Sterilizing Poor Women

Recalled Arizona senate president Russell Pearce, who proposed the state’s controversial anti-immigration law, resigned as the state’s GOP Vice-chair following remarks he made regarding sterilizing poor women.

On The Russell Pearce Show, he said,  “You put me in charge of Medicaid, the first thing I’d do is get Norplant, birth-control implants, or tubal ligations. Then we’ll test recipients for drugs and alcohol, and if you want to [reproduce] or use drugs or alcohol, then get a job.”

According to AZCentral, the Republican Party announced his resignation around 11:00 p.m. on  Sunday just hours after candidates expressed their displeasure with his remarks and a day after the Arizona Democratic Party Executive Director DJ Quinlan noted Pearce’s comments in a news release and pressed powerful GOP Republicans to denounce them.

“This was a mistake,” Pearce stated. “This mistake has been taken by the media and the left and used to hurt our Republican candidates.”

Pearce wrote that he does not want Democrats and reporters “to try and take a misstatement from my show and use it to attack our candidates.”

In his resignation letter to party Chairman Robert Graham, he wrote that he recognizes “that hosting a radio show and the nature of the debates that we have had and will continue to have are incompatible with what our Party needs from its leadership team.”

The only problem with Pearce claiming that it’s a ‘misstatement’ is that there is audio of his remarks. In addition, he was quoted verbatim.

I am not certain how you can take them out of context? As I recall, his paying gig is overseeing benefits for seniors – I want to see his resignation from that job as well. Jackass.

He looks creepy. He can easily be the avatar of misogyny and hate.

They would keep him there. Because the elders feel safe. They would have to say something to get him removed. A lot of them will not. That’s why McInsane is still present.

I’m sure this conversation took place before the resignation. Resign? Why do I have to resign, did I say something wrong? Ahhh they are a clueless bunch.

So, he would just be given a position, with less visibility. His views will not change.
