British newspapers The Guardian and The Telegraph are reporting that journalist Steven Sotloff has been beheaded by the same killer who murdered James Foley.

A video titled “A Second Message to America” was distributed Tuesday. The Associated Press reported Sotloff appears in an orange jumpsuit before he is beheaded by an Islamic State fighter. The fighter then makes a threat against Great Britain. The Washington Post confirmed they have seen the video.

I think ISIS, or whatever John McCain’s buddies are called this week, present the best case I can think of for the use of a neutron bomb.

This is the kind of reaction I expect from neocons. These are horrific, tragic events, but there needs to be proportionality.

      • Jake September 2nd, 2014 at 14:34

You are probably right – so what would be a proportional response?

After over 100 years of “one bad action after another” by the West in the Mid East, it is doubtful that there is ANY ” strategy ” that will even come close to “working” now….

I don’t know, but I do know that we have highly capable SEAL teams, as well as drones. As much as some progressives have an aversion to drone usage, there’s also a good side to them.

They are using technology to spread their message. It is time to turn out the lights and start taking out the power generation. Then knock out the radio and internet hubs and isolate them . What they want most is attention, time to take away their ability to get the kind of attention they want and bring the kind of attention they don’t want and leave them powerless and silent.

So after we do that, we block Al Jazeera? We filter the mail out of the region to foreign press offices for suspicious packages that might be DVDs or videotapes?

            • mea_mark September 2nd, 2014 at 19:54

No. The idea is to make it really hard for them to be insanely evil. There has to be some path at redemption and evolution. It is the same reason we let right-wing trolls come here and only ban them when they get out of hand. Heck, we even gave a moderator position to one. -;)

Give ISIS a “path at redemption?”

Careful, people might think you’re Phil Robertson.

There should always be a way to redeem ones-self, not that it is at all likely that it will be taken but I think it should always be offered.

A proportional response? Like “Peace in our time” Chamberlain? This from someone who would have preferred to interview H rather than stop him. There is evil in the world, ask Daniel, James, and Steven about that.

The best description I’ve heard so far is from US Sec. of Defense Hagel when he called Islamic State “apocalyptic.” Sort of kin to Christian “End Timers,” or the proverbial Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, evil angels or perhaps extraterrestrials. Who knows? But they do appear to operate like a cult, recruiting through sophisticated media appealing to disaffected youth in both the East and West. And, IMHO, this is the most immediate and real threat we face here in America. I’m not sure how to counter that, other than to keep building a world wise enough to reject extremism, and embrace secular democracy over ideological tyranny.http://ts4.mm.bing.net/th?id=HN.608012346833502375&pid=15.1

Why neutron? Application of a few million degrees of heat, all that sand fuses into glass and a thousand years from now we can look down and know where to drill for the oil.

Tragic, horrific, but the more we respond to such provocations the more they will happen.

These are war crimes/crimes against humanity by barbarians. When they target and brutally murder unarmed non combatant people, they are giving us no choice but to go after them. No other strategy or negotiation with them will work, they are suicidal religious fanatics still fighting the crusades.

I suppose we could advertise and hold up body parts, perhaps a limb, from the drone strikes to satisfy those on our side that we’re killing people also. I’m pretty sure we’re winning in body count score.

It’s infuriating, maddening to watch these hapless victims subjected too such extreme abuse. Any decent person wants these thugs stopped and stopped now! I guess the main problems are 1) locating, 2) getting a clean shot, (these jerks like to hide behind women and children). They are taunting us, trying to provoke and throw us off balance. But Obama’s too cool for that nonsense. Sooner or later we’ll get them, of that I’m sure. Meanwhile we need to brace ourselves for more of these brutal, cowardly acts.
Also, the information is sketchy at best yet there are some indications Islamic State has set-up shop in Juarez, Mexico, just across the border from El Passo and Ft. Bliss, Texas. According to some, the plan is to attack us using car bombs in that area…
