First Openly Gay NFL Player Released

The St. Louis Rams have released Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted by the NFL.

All NFL teams had to reach the 53-man NFL limit by Saturday ahead of next week’s season openers.

Sam, a defensive end taken in the seventh round, was among the last four players cut from the Rams’ lineup.

Other NFL teams have until Sunday to claim Sam’s rights or he will become a free agent.

I predicted this headline as soon as the Rams opted for him — that at some point, they’d go down in history as the first team to cut/trade an openly gay player.

I remember that. I was nodding silent in agreement.

He served his purpose for them.

As the coach said, there were better players. Is that REALLY to difficult a concept for you people??

If the idea is to treat gays as equally as anyone else, then they must face the same pitfalls everyone else does..

He might do better as a free agent, this could be a blessing.

and just because he is gay doesn’t mean he is NFL talented, his orientation should not ever factor in on any decision to roster him.. Although not the same thing, Tim Tebows National Championship/Heisman Trophy didn’t mean he was ultimate NFL QB material..

He’ll probably make the practice squad if no other team picks him up off of waivers.

Regardless of what his future may be, he opened doors for many down the road. Good luck to him.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Get on the practice squad, get some more experience, get a little bigger.

Draftees get routinely cut at the end of the NFL preseason. Unless there is evidence that the Rams released him because of his sexual orientation — dissention in the locker room, concerns about it becoming a media focal point and team distraction — rather than his performance on the field, it should be a one-day news story … and then we move on.

If he performed reasonably well but the team felt that they had better players at that position, then Sam may get another shot with another team at some point during the season.
