Words And Images From Ferguson

Newsweek reporter Alexander Nazaryan traveled to Ferguson, Missouri, to report on the days of unrest and protest that followed the shooting of a black teenager, Michael Brown, by a white police officer. He brought back quotes from residents and protesters. “I can’t sleep at night,” a woman standing just a few feet away from where Michael…

At this time, there are more reporters and photographers in Ferguson than there are looters and rioters.

I am sorry, they have lost my sympathy at this point. Many things have not been handled properly, on both sides of the aisle. Plenty of blame to pass around. But what is happening now, is completely unjustified.

    • NW10 August 19th, 2014 at 10:21

on both sides of the aisle.

      Jake Tapper proves you wrong.

When you’ve got one side of the street with people peacefully protesting, and the other side full of cops dressed in riot gear when there is NO imminent threat, how the hell can you pull the “BOTH SIDES” bulls*it card?

      • Pistol-Packing August 19th, 2014 at 11:09

Your an idiot, Jake Tapper proved in his own words why there is that police presence there. and what was his words?? “Yes, there has been riots, Yes there has been violence, Yes, there has been looting” !!! And his statement of there is “no reason for this”… Well, if there was not already violence, rioting, and looting he maybe right. But there has been.

        • NW10 August 19th, 2014 at 11:13

“No reason for this,” referring to the unnecessary and elevated police response that night to a non imminent threat to protesters peacefully demonstrating. Maybe the police should put the riot shields and gear away and let the peaceful protesters do their thing. It says a lot when, of all people, the Bloods and Crips of Ferguson are doing more to stop the violence than the police are. Think about that: gangs that are supposedly violent are actually doing MORE to contain the violence and looting than the local law enforcement. Quit reading the right wing propaganda and open your eyes to reality.

            Hmmm, And this happened !!!

“But the scene quickly deteriorated after a handful of protesters threw rocks, bottles and Molotov cocktails at police. Officers responded by firing stun grenades and tear gas canisters.”

“Johnson said that a building and an unoccupied house were set on fire, and that his officers came under “heavy gunfire.”

“We have been criticized for using SWAT trucks during protests. We did not deploy them into crowds until things deteriorated,” he said. “Once again, not a single bullet was fired by officers despite coming under heavy attack.””

And what do they do, when they start burning the place again??

Like I’m going to believe the words from a police department that said over the loudspeaker last night that if you were in the streets in a row, you were “unlawfully assembled.” Keep on defending the infringement of the Ferguson citizens right to address their grievances by the police, you’d fit in just fine in Kim Jong Un’s North Korea or Putin’s Russia.

    • Yenta August 19th, 2014 at 10:33

What exactly would you consider “justified”? Is it JUST for the cops to withhold information? Is it JUST for a cop to empty his clip into an unarmed person who is not a threat? Is it JUST for cops to go looking for a video that would make people think Mike Brown was a thug? Was it JUST for cops to not release the name of the cop who did the shooting? These people started protesting because they didn’t see ANY justice. They are angry, and they have a right to be. Then when they were being peaceful, they were met with cops wearing camouflage, and pointing automatic rifles from the top of an MRAP. Using tear gas is unlawful in war, but these cops have used it freely to intimidate and abuse people. THAT is completely unjustified.

      • Pistol-Packing August 19th, 2014 at 11:16

“If” it is true, and the reports of at least a dozen witnesses who collaborate the officers version of being attacked inside the vehicle, and then charged. Would certainly change the conversation. As far as emptying a magazine. You shoot until the threat is diminished.

As far as demanding justice. Well what is justice? Incident happened Saturday afternoon, protests started Saturday night ?? When did the looting and burning the stores happen? And yes, law enforcement do not always release the name of an officer until an investigation has taken place.

Now ASK yourself, why were they initially greeted with officers in riot gear and weapons. Probably because it is being proven time and time again, that these assemblies have been turning violent on an ever increasing rate.

        • NW10 August 19th, 2014 at 11:23

and the reports of at least a dozen witnesses who collaborate the officers version of being attacked inside the vehicle

You actually buy and believe the #Josie BS pushed by Fox News, CNN, and Gateway Pundit? That’s your problem: believing right wing hearsay and spin as opposed to the numerous eyewitness accounts which, for the most part, have been more consistent than the FPD have.

As far as demanding justice. Well what is justice?

Justice would be the arrest of Officer Darren Wilson, followed by a swift indictment and conviction.

Now ASK yourself, why were they initially greeted with officers in riot gear and weapons.

Even better question: where were THESE cops when they were met with armed protesters on the Bundy ranch, and actually had threats of violence made towards them? Where was the tear gas to be deployed on the Bundy ranch towards the armed protesters?

          • William August 19th, 2014 at 11:39

Justice would be the arrest of Officer Darren Wilson, followed by a swift indictment and conviction.

Why should the indictment and trial be any different than anyone else?

Shouldn’t there be a complete investigation before the evidence is presented to a grand jury?

Even better question: where were THESE cops when they were met with armed protesters on the Bundy ranch

“Why should the indictment and trial be any different than anyone else?” well, if he’s indicted, tried and (choke) aquitted, it’s at least a better form of justice than what brown received. brown was not afforded the benefit of the doubt. there was no citation for jay-walking, there was no investigation (as there was nothing to investigate by the way) there was no arrest, there was no trial, there was no conviction, by the “justice system” anyway. wilson, decided brown’s fate in all of 3 mins of the inital contact.

I am not implying that the officers actions were in any way proper or legal.
Your assertions carry more weight when presented to a jury than to me.

I maintain the word “IF” !! If and when those reports come out and I feel are credible, I will weigh the validity. But to discount the report and assume nothing, only proves that you have a preconceived notion of guilt.

And what if “Justice” is, that through witness testimoney and forensics clears Wilson of any wrong doing? then What?? more riots??

And in case you didn’t notice. There where heavily armed officers at the bundy ranch.

All the photos and videos have gotten global attention, and I think that has been a good thing. Nobody wants the looting and destruction of property, least of all the people who live in Ferguson. Those people want justice. They want Darren Wilson arrested. How terrifying it must be to live in a town where cops have a license to kill, and they address people by saying things like, “Get the f#ck on the sidewalk!” They yelled obscenities at some of the media, including Chris Hayes, and threatened them with tear gas, and being shot with something. They were on live TV being nasty with the media, so imagine how they talk to anybody else there.

I’m bewildered by the number of people who support mob violence as a legitimate means to protest. We have a justice systems that has worked very well in this country for centuries and while we don’t always like the verdicts, everyone is entitled due process and are considered innocent until proven guilty. When we depart from the rules of law we have what is going on right now, anarchy.

If you consider the behavior of the rioters justified, will you feel the same way if a black cop shot an unarmed white kid and the people protested in the same manner? It is not about race, it is about behavior. Martin Luther King Jr. said “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character” I judge people by the content of their character; white, black, brown or other.

Not all the facts have been known, yet people are already convicting the police officer. Would you like that to be the new rule of law? Would you be happy that instead of being judged by a jury of your peers you will be judged and convicted by a rioting mob?

There has been enough recent events to make us more cautious before jumping to a conclusion when the facts have not been presented. Cambridge police, Duke Lacrosse, Zimmerman-Martin to mention a few.

Remember, what you may embrace as justification now could be the same justification used against you in the future.
