Brian Jeffs, co-founder of Michigan Open Carry, who authored a book titled, My Parents Open Carry, joined Alan Colmes in his radio show Tuesday night.

Jeffs said, “..there are a lot of adult books on firearms and we thought you know, there’s no kids’ books.”

Colmes asked if Jeffs thought the majority of American people support openly carrying guns everywhere, to which Jeffs deflected the question. Jeffs clams that Open Carry advocates are responsible people.

Even with the fact that Jeffs authored a children’s book, he claims he’s not calling for children to open carry and further said that we need to teach children that firearms are not toys and that they can be dangerous.

Alan brought up the Open Carry protesters in Virginia and Texas who have upset shoppers and asked, “What’s your reaction to shoppers who have expressed great unease?”

Jeffs said, “In those cases, I believe all of them were long guns so those were rifles.” When asked if he supports that action, Jeffs said, “I do personally…”

When told the public has expressed that they feel intimidated by these groups, Jeffs said, “That’s the great thing about America. I can wear a t-shirt that has certain slogans on them that would upset and offend people…”

Alan said, “We’re not just talking about slogans. We’re talking about people who are carrying loaded guns.”

Jeffs said, “Right, and loaded weapons if handled lawfully and responsibly are perfectly safe.”

Alan explained that there are shoppers with kids who see open carry advocates with their guns who make them nervous.

“I haven’t found that personally with me open carrying my handgun,” Jeffs said. Alan asked if he has any sympathy for shoppers who feel that way, to which Jeffs said, “I can’t control…”

“There are probably a few people that are upset but I’ll bet the majority of them aren’t,” Jeffs continued. “You’re only going to hear the story about the ones that are.”

Alan called out the Open Carry group in Texas who said they were being trolled by “skanky topless libtards.” Jeffs said he wasn’t familiar with that incident.

Alan brought up Open Carry Tarrant County walking into traffic with weapons simply because they can by law, and asked, “Do you support that?”

Jeffs said, “I personally wouldn’t support being reckless by carrying a firearm out into traffic.”  He added, “I’m not going to speak for them. I’m not going to condemn a person’s right to carry.”

When Alan pressed the topic of Open Carry advocates bringing guns into traffic because they know they can legally do so, Jeffs said, “They maybe or they may have a mental issue.”

“If they have a mental issue, should they be having a gun?,” Alan asked.

Jeffs said, “Well that’s not for me to decide.” Then he went on to explain that many people diagnosed with mental illness have never hurt anybody.

“I’m talking about the kind of mental illness where guns become and issue…,” Alan remarked.

Alan did bring up the characters names: Bea Strong and Richard Strong (Dick).

When Alan mentioned that Parents Against Gun Violence felt this book was a form of indoctrination, Jeffs said they obviously didn’t read the book.

When the radio host brought up statistics in other countries, such as England, Jeffs said the homicide rate isn’t high due to lack of gun ownership because they’ve never had guns, which makes sense to no one ever.

Jeffs said they had plenty of guns when they came over in 1776. (see: military)

Naturally, a caller compared openly carrying guns to gay and lesbians couples.

Jeffs interjected, “Are you saying that people that own guns don’t love each other?” Seriously, he asked that. Alan had to explain that gay people kissing won’t kill you.

So Jeffs has gone from comparing Open Carrying long rifles to T-shirts and gay people.

As for Open Carrying into restaurants with patrons feeling intimidated, Jeffs said, “Those people are free to leave.”

Finally, Jeffs gave his opinion. The Open Carry gangs who are intimidating others in family-friendly restaurants and flooding busy streets, while unnerving motorists (see: carjackings), is acceptable to him.

My opinion: Brian Jeffs is not a responsible gun owner if he supports irresponsible actions from other gun owners, while being the leader of an Open Carry group. What part of public safety and respect do these groups not understand?

I was raised in a house full of guns. We had a locked case with a Remington, .22 cal. repeater, a gorgeous Browning Light Twelve .12 gauge, a vintage Winchester .30/.30 lever action, a Remington .243 repeater, a .22 revolver, and a Remington bolt action 700 30.06. My Granny’s 13 acre farm had loaded weapons hanging on the bedroom wall: a Browning .12 gauge, a Winchester .22 repeater and a Remington 30.06 repeater. I knew from the time I could talk that the guns had a power and danger that was different than anything else. I was taught firearm safety and responsibility with a Daisy B.B gun, I learned to treat it EXACTLY as I would a real firearm. In my upbringing, guns were TOOLS to be used for specific purposes….deer hunting, duck hunting, or keeping critters out of my Uncle’s vegetable garden. At no time in my life did ANYONE ever discuss the idea that our weapons were to be used against the police, or the duly elected government of this country. At no time did we discuss the need to use our weapons on other citizens of this country. We knew the possibility of a criminal forcing us to defend ourselves existed, but it was considered to be as likely as being struck by lightning in an earthquake. But now, there is a new type of gun owner. One who buys military style weapons, and massive ammo clips and huge stores of ammo. These new gun owners obsess over black gangs and the perceived need to shoot and kill them. The new breed spend energy and effort carrying their guns publicly, as an open threat to police and government officials. The new breed trumpet their desire to revolt, rebel and use their guns to engage in a civil war, simply because they lose elections. I would love to believe that every gun owner is a safe responsible person, but the NRA and the rightist/racists have descended into lunacy, taking a large segment of gun owners over the cliff with them. I read about more and more loons with weapons, and there are more and more incidences of unhinged gun owners every day. I support the 2nd amendment, but those of you who think it gives you carte blanche to revolt, rebel and engage in civil war must have missed the parts of the constitution that CLEARLY define “sedition” and “treason.”

I dare say that if everyone who owned guns felt the same way you do, we would have a hell of a lot less of a mess on our hands.

I wear a pistol in a shoulder holster every day….but, I live 8 miles from a paved road, on a 6400 acre ranch full of domesticated animals. I may encounter bears, mountain lions, bobcats or coyotes intent on killing our critters, so my open carry has nothing to do with revolt or threatening others. I also am spitting distance from the Rio Bravo, so Border Patrol advises me and others to be armed, incase of a run in with cartel drug mules. I would NEVER wear my shoulder holstered weapon in town or in a city, it’s just begging for idiocy. Living where I do, I NEED a weapon: http://www.birsongoutpost.com

I have nothing against people owning gun for their own protection, but they’re so easy to use (even a child can operate a handgun) and they’re way too easy to obtain. I live in Chicago and one needs only to drive 30 minutes into Indiana and obtain a firearm relatively easily.

I’m also against concealed carry permits. With the amount of road rage today what’s to stop someone, with no time to calm down, from shooting somebody who may have accidentally cut him off?

I was raised in pretty much the same way you were except we didn’t have quite so many guns. My dad had a couple of deer rifles and a shotgun. My brother had a deer rifle when he got older. There were a couple of others and I still have the .22 rifle I had as a kid. We also had a couple of handguns, one ow which was a family heirloom. I also feel pretty much the same way you do about the current crop of NRA followers. I took a gun safety course sponsored by the NRA when I was a young girl, probably 10 or 11. It was a good course and I learned a lot — do they still do that or are they so busy trying to convince America that we should all have a million assault weapons and be ready to fight our own government?
You said it much better than I could have. Thanks.

What a novel approach! Think of the untapped market of adult books for kids! We can squeeze some more money out of this 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon yet!

Open Carry passed here in 2006 and I didn’t even know. Because no one did it until like two years ago but got glared at by the ole timers. Medusa has nothing on them. That guy didn’t do it again that I’ve seen. We mostly see guns during hunting season. Black powder season and of course bow hunting. We got to ranges but you won’t see idiots walking around the food store with an AR strapped to their backs. Friggin’ pathetic.

No one is hurt with the open carry protest, it scares the kids…more like the parents have some sort of unplaced fears. Pierce Morgan got thrown off the air for his anti-gun law stance, he also tried to compare how much safer it is in England, trouble is the NRA leader had already reviewed English statistics and they were flawed in many ways, a couple months later a Somalian immigrant hatchets to death a man in the streets. Stop making excuses and get your Carry Concealed weapons permit, train with your weapon, keep it hidden for sure (open carry is nutz) and the next time you and your little toddlers are in a public movie theater, mental guy comes in fully loaded, you shoot him.

    • whatthe46 August 13th, 2014 at 20:12

“…mental guy comes in fully loaded, you shoot him.” the movie is on, its dark (child’s movie ok) so it’s full of children, guy throws smoke bomb, starts shooting, who will the “good” guy with the gun shoot at? the “bad” guy with the gun he can’t see? more likely than not, more innocent children because he’s shooting blindly as well. yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

      • mcalleyboy August 13th, 2014 at 22:06

Never heard of a smoke bomb but good point. The last mass shootings dealt with mental issues, these guys wore uniforms or military style uniforms and targeted those “Gun free zones” geez I need to make sure I’m safe, so lets all put up those gun free zone sign’s and threaten those that carry concealed, makes a whole lot of sense to me, how about you?

        • whatthe46 August 14th, 2014 at 00:26

in the aurora shooting, when he went in he didn’t go in with guns in hand through the front door. when everyone was going into the theatre, no one paid attention to the man walking out the exit. he placed a wedge to keep the door “propped” went to his car to get his gear and returned when the movie started. he did have “flash” grenades if i’m not mistaken, and started shooting. if someone else would have been in the audience with a gun, can you imagine attempting to return fire, but not at a target, but at a sound. imagine then how many more than the number murdered would have been killed by “friendly” fire. wherever their are places where there’s open carry, you take a risk of someone flying off the handle or getting jumpy. or shooting out of paranoia. gun free zone or not, if a person has an agenda and it includes mass murder, they will definitely find a way to accomplish that.

          • mcalleyboy August 14th, 2014 at 01:02

Guns are not for everyone, if your not willing to use your weapon or have an out of control behavioral problem then I totally agree with you, don’t carry concealed. There have been victims I’ll be if they could speak, would like at least a fighting chance at life, sadly they’re now silent, I can’t think of anything more dangerous than a semi-automatic rifle in a crowd, someone needs to level the playing field that weapon can do more damage than any pistol.

              I appreciate
your concerns and respect your point of view.
But, you’ve got to admit this mess is getting out of control. Seriously. Level the playing field. This is not the wild west, but it appears so
many would prefer it be that way. I have
been to the movies once since aurora. Seriously.
And when I did go, I paid close attention to the 2 exit signs. If I saw one person go out that door, you
can best believe I was out of there. And
since I have such a concern, I haven’t been back. Its pretty dam* sad, that someone can take away something that
was once so enjoyable to so many people.

Your absolutely right, some people have ruined a good night out for others due to fears. My view is that I don’t care anymore what the media proclaims as the the new gun story of the day, they seem to have all the answer’s on guns and its “We don’t like them”, trouble is the bad guys do… I’ll carry concealed legally (US) and protect my one life, there’s no second chance, will also protect my wife and kids, I don’t see red tape or anti-gun laws coming back to haunt us again, criminal gets light sentence the jails are over crowded, how many of these murders have gotten away killings before they are eventually apprehended or taken out, probably several, another sad fact. Mental Health guys are a one go massacre but the real dangerous ones are out there, so many missing people, kids young girls, I’ve noticed women are into arming themselves more.

It’s his trait, I do enjoy his discussions, he is entertaining but have witnessed on several occasions when the audience isn’t with him he gets testy, he threw his papers down after a women gun advocate wouldn’t agree with his anti gun stance.

It’s his trait, I do enjoy his discussions, he is entertaining but have witnessed on several occasions when the audience isn’t with him he gets testy, he threw his papers down after a women gun advocate wouldn’t agree with his anti gun stance.
