125,000 Virginians Mistakenly Notified That They Cannot Vote

The Virginia Department of Elections wrongly mailed notifications to about 125,000 registered Virginia voters which informed them that they may no longer be eligible to vote in the commonwealth, according to an email sent Tuesday to Virginia registrars.

I’m not certain how such an error can occur.

According to The Roanoke Times, the letters went to residents who have not moved out of state.

Matthew J. Davis, chief information officer with the Department of Elections said, “The individuals had moved or updated their address with DMV, but the update was in-state and they should not have been included in the ‘What’s Your Status’ mailing.”

Davis added to tell registrars to let voters know, “if you receive a call from a voter regarding this,” that the letter was sent in error and then verify that their current address is correct.

Sounds like someone did a bulk address query of “WHERE moved_status = ‘Y'” and forgot to add “AND new_state != ‘VA'” — I hate when that happens.

I swear sometimes’s this state’s government is a piece of performance art created by libertarians to make anarchy look positive by comparison.

Can I put that on my tombstone? It’s brilliantly stated.

Sounds more like another trial run attempt by the right wing to suppress the vote. If it works here, watch for more “mistakes” in other red and battleground states. If it isn’t obvious they will do anything to win elections, you haven’t been paying attention.

The right wing Christian Teapublicans are quite conveniently stupid then, for all the “mistakes” that target Democratic demographics.

Uh Huh…if not for the past attempts to suppress the vote around the country, you might have a point.
At this point, it would be naive to ignore this as a stupid mistake.

To hype a conspiracy theory: what percentage of the 125,000 were minority or liberal leaning? Just saying…

    • mea_mark July 31st, 2014 at 11:13

Poor people that rent tend to move more than homeowners do. My guess, it would disproportionately affect the economically challenged democrats.

    • mea_mark July 31st, 2014 at 12:02

Lol, that certainly wouldn’t be fair.

I’m not surprised. Virgina has given us a few mistakes. “Transvaginal” Bob McDonnell comes to mind.
