In the presence of 1200 dead civilians, women and children, an article bemoaning the loss of quarterly profits is obscene.

I disagree; the price/cost of war includes many components, the economy being one of them. To just ignore everything but the casualty count(I noticed you forgot to add in the Israeli deaths btw…. what, their deaths don’t matter to you at all?) would be a disservice and misleading.

Well excuse me for rounding off a number. That was yesterday’s toll, today we have more accurate figures so I don’t have to: 1,298.
That includes 53 soldiers and 3 civilians from Israel. The rest were Palestinians, mostly children.

I notice you “forgot to add in” damage to the economy of Gaza. Is that “a disservice and misleading”?

First, you mentioned, and I quote:
          “dead civilians, women and children”.
          You did exclude Israeli soldiers.

” I notice you “forgot to add in” damage to the economy of Gaza. Is that “a disservice and misleading”?”
LOL, read more carefully… notice I didn’t mention just one economy or the other, thereby including both.

Perhaps I am over-reacting but I’m more concerned that this latest flare-up is only a preview of what may soon happen in the West Bank along with the very troubling emergence of this “Islamic State” A group that makes Hamas look like boyscots.

    • Spirit of America July 30th, 2014 at 14:00

good read of the upcoming situation. Israel has already detained several ‘IS representatives” last week.

Alan your title is misleading. The story indicates Israel will not suffer any major economic harm.

War is costly. It drains countries of capital and cohesion. It destroys empires from within. It lays waste to the planet. It festers within society for generations afterward.

    War sucks.

Each of the Tamir missiles used by Israel’s Iron Dome system costs between $50,000 – 90,000.00.

The Iron Dome missiles plus the cost of the IDF’s DIME bombs, flechette shells and various depleted uranium munitions launched from F-16s, Apache gunships, warships and Merkava battle tanks all make for a very expensive tab on Uncle Sam’s credit card.

The Iron Dome missiles have been highly effective at keeping the casualty count on the Israeli side low. Proof once again that you get what you pay for.

Don’t be foolded by the misleading title, the article makes it clear costs so far will have no major impact on the Israli economy. Of course that all depends on how long (and wide) the conflict rages.

I have seen reports the Israelis have asked for an additional $275,000 to thier annual grant of around $3 billion, which I suppose is made mostly in the form of weapons and ammo, although I also know it helps fund social and cultural activities that promote peace and understanding.

The takeaway for Americans should be how deeply invested we are in this conflict. And, politics aside, ask what is our moral responsibility? I think I’ve made my thoughts on the matter clear in posts below.
