Brain Scientist Allegedly Points AR-15 At Women In Airport, Says He Was Exercising His Second Amendment Rights

An Arizona man pointed an AR-15 rifle at a mother and her teenage daughter inside one of the busiest terminals at Sky Harbor International Airport on Friday, according to police. Peter Nathan Steinmetz, 54, a brain scientist with Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, said he was exercising his Second Amendment rights.

According to its website, Steinmetz is director of the neural engineering program at Barrow Neurological Institute.

Court documents state that Steinmetz was seen on Level 3 ordering coffee at a Starbucks while carrying in plain view a rifle over his right shoulder.

“It certainly was concerning to other passengers at the airport, not knowing why this individual was walking around with an assault rifle slung over his arm,” Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos said.

However, Martos noted that guns are not restricted in that area of the airport. Police told the Phoenix New Times that, in general, it’s not illegal to carry a semi-automatic rifle into an airport terminal. In this case, the problem was “the way he was carrying it,” Martos said.

CBS 5 AZ reports, “Steinmetz then walked to the east end of the Level 3 terminal, where he stopped in front of the B gates and then proceeded to an area where people wait for passengers, court paperwork stated.”

Steinmetz “proceeded to remove the Stag Arm AR-15 from his right shoulder, thus causing the muzzle to face two victims sitting to the right,” documents say.

A mother and her 17-year-old daughter told officers “they felt in fear of their safety when the rifle was pointed in their direction.”

Officers approached Steinmetz, and he said he was at Sky Harbor only to buy a cup of coffee.

“I know he probably wasn’t doing it intentionally (pointing the gun at the mother and daughter),” one woman said who heard about the incident. “It’s probably traumatizing to those who were just here.”

According to Martos, Steinmetz has brought a weapon to the airport before.

Officers questioned him just last November when he picked his wife up from Sky Harbor armed with an assault rifle.

Martos said just a few days earlier, a TSA agent was shot to death by a gunman at Los Angeles International Airport.

According to Martos, Steinmetz told officers he was exercising his right to bear arms.

“I know that he does have the right to do that,” said Julie Sanchez. “But I just feel he has other ways, other options, to prove his point.”

CBS 5 AZ reports, “Steinmetz faces two counts of disorderly conduct with a weapon and is out of jail on $5,000 bond.”

Steinmetz has been ordered to surrender his weapons and will be back in court on Thursday.

The medical center where Steinmetz is employed responded:

“We can confirm that Peter Steinmetz is employed as a researcher with St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. We are aware of the situation and are taking it very seriously. At present this issue is being handled by Human Resources and our policy is not to comment on HR matters.”

One commenter at KPHO writes, “The doctor did not point the weapon at the woman he just move it off his back and there was a crazy lady who wanted attention why the doc had the rifle of course working at barrows which will not stand by him they will fire him they have no guts for there people.” [sic]

Which blatantly disregards the public’s right to feel safe when a weapon is pointing at another person. .

These people who carry rifles around with them are ridiculous, I hope he is fired, but don’t count on it.

So a woman who reacts with fear when a gun barrel is pointed towards her and her child is a “crazy lady”. But a self-centered a$$hole who parades around the airport with an object that does nothing but kill people is simply exercising his right.

That in a nutshell is an excellent summation of why this liberal gun owner wants nothing to do with the 2nd amendment zealots. At this point, I am starting to think that amending the Constitution is not such a bad idea after all.

My sentiments exactly I live in NY and really am not sure how the law reads as far as open carry, and have no desire to visit any state that permits such nonsense. I do hope that something is done concerning gun safety along the lines of safe storage and liability insurance for damages whether “accidental” or intentional.
I also pray that if I’m ever in an area where some ammosexual ahole displays a weapon in such a manner I have the courage to beat the crap out of him for doing it.

At first blush, I thought this was a nut sighting people through his scope and then looking to cry persecution. It’s apparently much less than that, a matter of him not keeping the muzzle up when taking it off his shoulder.

    • Anomaly 100 July 29th, 2014 at 11:24

The latter part of your comment is the most mind-boggling since he insists on open carrying.

      • R.J. Carter July 29th, 2014 at 11:27

His carelessness in the way he move his gun off his shoulder? That’s what gave grounds to the complaint, wasn’t it, that he took it off in a way that allowed the muzzle to become pointed at a person?

        • Anomaly 100 July 29th, 2014 at 11:32

He should know better. I know better. You know better than to *ever* point a weapon — intentionally or not — at another person unless you plan to pull the trigger.

          He really should know better.

          • R.J. Carter July 29th, 2014 at 11:42

I’d really like to see the security footage of how it went down.

            • Larry Schmitt July 29th, 2014 at 11:52

I always thought the first point made in any firearms safety program was, “Never point a weapon at anyone.” Unless, of course, you intend to use it. Seems he forgot rule number one. Exactly what are people like him trying to prove, carrying a rifle in a situation like that, just because the law allows them to? They are always claiming their weapons are about self defense, but what is he defending himself from at the airport? Is he constantly expecting an attack? I don’t get it.

              • R.J. Carter July 29th, 2014 at 11:59

Well, apparently a TSA agent was shot a few months prior. So there may be people to defend against after all.

                • Larry Schmitt July 29th, 2014 at 12:05

I was aware of that when I posted. But that’s one occurrence. Does that justify everyone walking around armed 24/7?

                • tiredoftea July 29th, 2014 at 12:06

Which the doctor couldn’t have known about as he brought his rifle along for airport coffee.

Point taken, that it happened months before would likely have made the incident not top of mind as he was strolling around the dangerous food court.

        • Foundryman July 29th, 2014 at 12:11

Does it really make a difference if it’s carelessness or deliberate when a loaded gun is pointed at someone sitting there drinking their coffee?

          • edmeyer_able July 29th, 2014 at 12:16

Just this week another pregnant women was 2A’d by her husbands friend while showing off his collection. If the gun had a trigger lock it would have lessened the chances for such an event.
As an aside, take a look at the leading causes of death for pregnant women..

When working at Syr.airport we had 2 checkpoints separated by about 600 yards with a Police Station in the middle. One officer was at each ckpt and often their level of fitness was questionable. Was I ever concerned of an attack?………………..every damn day.

          • tiredoftea July 29th, 2014 at 12:43

Nope, I would have been in the “blast radius of the IED”. Seeing unattended luggage always sent a chill and the baggage claim area was the worst place to patrol.

You have to wonder why he keeps coming to the airport, carrying a weapon. As a rule, this isn’t something somebody just does. It’s not like it’s a fun place to hang out. Hell, I know of no airport that doesn’t require that you park a significant distance from the gate.

          • R.J. Carter July 29th, 2014 at 12:42

Which means, of course, he walked quite a ways toward an airport carrying a weapon openly. Or he’s paying $15 an hour to park near the airport for a $7 cup of coffee.

Or was he picking someone up? I couldn’t tell.

          • Larry Schmitt July 29th, 2014 at 13:11

But apparently, “…he said he was at Sky Harbor only to buy a cup of coffee.” What, Phoenix isn’t like every other city in this country, with a Starbucks on every corner, sometimes two? I think he goes to the airport just to show off his manly gun. Wink wink.

          • Wingsfan81 July 29th, 2014 at 20:50

Trying to terrorize people at the airport by flaunting a deadly weapon, just because of his manhood complex, certainly qualifies as “stupid and malevolent.”

I wish these open-carry nuts would avail themselves of the mental health options available through Obamacare. Deal with their issues with penis size rather than subject others to their compensation mechanisms for their inadequacies.

          • R.J. Carter July 30th, 2014 at 09:25

This consistent (from everyone) psychoanalysis of the open carry groups focusing on genitalia probably isn’t licensed psychiatry, doesn’t help the situation, and is probably not covered by Obamacare.

            • jasperjava July 30th, 2014 at 11:38

Other than mass shootings, the open-carry movement is the most disturbing aspect of the out-of-control gun culture in the United States. Any helpful suggestion that helps these crazies get the mental health assistance they need is welcome.

If you walk around in public — including at dining establishments, shopping malls, bars, etc. — waving your loaded assault rifle or pointing your semi-automatic handgun at people, often yelling epithets at passersby, perhaps even daring anyone to try to take it from you … then yeah, you’re a terrorist.

The values in this country are insane. Guns in public are just peachy. But the sight of a woman’s bare breast is a sign of the collapse of western civilization. In some ways, the United States is bizarro world.

This is what makes people sitting around a feel threatened when a second amendment zealot with no training walks around making a spectacle of himself.

Here it is. Open-carry activists’ constant refrain is that “they aren’t pointing guns at anyone or threatening them.” Well, it took less than 24 hours for them to be proven wrong.

I’m so proud of him and his bravery in protecting his rights, while
simultaneously violating those of innocent bystanders.

um, with all the talk about terrorists in airports, it is legal to carry a loaded weapon in plain sight in the airport, but illegal to bring toothpaste onto the plane? What is to prevent a terrorist from carrying a loaded assault weapon into the airport then opening fire?

um, with all the talk about terrorists in airports, it is legal to carry a loaded weapon in plain sight in the airport, but illegal to bring toothpaste onto the plane? What is to prevent a terrorist from carrying a loaded assault weapon into the airport then opening fire?
Life is becoming a Monty Python skit.

In areas where open carry is legal, you can bring them in common areas only. But yes, it still sounds crazy to me.

I’m waiting for a shootout to occur, a day is coming when a drug lord hitman will be expressing his second amendment right to open carry while looking for his target in an airport. When he finds them, you know who will be the first ones around him to get shot? Idiots with a gun slung over their shoulder, that’s who, followed by anyone standing near that idiot.

Not all gun owners are asshats. The sad thing is these Bozo’s will have the audacity to act surprised when the population gets fed up and starts introducing legislation.

I hear you. Not all gun owners are asshats, that is true. These open-carry activists have proven themselves time and again to be interested only in causing controversy. That’s why they show up en masse, after pre-selecting a target business. These people are behaving in a fashion that shows pre-meditation, and should be fairly certain that the response to their open-carry is going to be negative.

      • William July 29th, 2014 at 21:28

As I have said before. It’s is perfectly legal for me to dress as a clown and juggle and laugh as a funeral goes by. It’s legal, but it would mean I was being an assh*le. Whatever I was trying to represent would reap the fallout of my actions. Sadly decent responsible gun owners will pay for the actions of these morons.

        • Mo Reno July 29th, 2014 at 21:43

As will the victims of their fetishistic need to display weapons.

        • John David Peer July 30th, 2014 at 00:54

The way you Americans make all Muslims “pay” for the bad behaviour of a few, eh?

          Pathetic.

    • John David Peer July 30th, 2014 at 00:52

Yes, because the many should be judged and condemned because of the actions of a few radicals and extremists, is that it?

See how easy it is to become a prejudiced bigot when you feel justified?
      “Liberal”, my arse…

      • William July 30th, 2014 at 09:40

You may have missed my point.
I am a gun owner. I am not afraid of liberals. I am not afraid of the president taking away my guns because.
        A. He cannot
        B. he hasn’t signed one single bit of legislation in that direction.
In fact, the president has actually relaxed gun laws.
What I actually fear is a few A-holes ruining it for the rest of us.

        • John David Peer July 30th, 2014 at 10:27

I agree, the president is not the concern. Congress is. And as long as you have misguided zealots like Dianne “I already have MY gun” Feinstein moving towards implementing another useless AWB, you VERY MUCH need to be concerned about the gov’t restricting your ownership rights.

You have less to worry about from “the population” (??).

But anti-gunowner extremists like Ms Glockstein will prevent a Dem House, mark my words, and that’s a shame.
