UPS Driver Charged With Stealing Dozens Of Guns

On Friday, a California UPS delivery driver was arrested for stealing dozens of shipped guns, then passed them on to another man who  sold on the black market, according to federal prosecutors.

36-year-old Curtis Hays of Rancho Cucamonga, was taken into custody on a federal indictment filed Wednesday in federal court.

According to the indictment, it was in 2012 that the delivery driver allegedly stole packages containing 72 weapons at the UPS shipping hub in Ontario, east of Los Angeles.

The Associated Press reports:

The guns were bound for a Turner’s Outdoorsman sporting goods store in Rancho Cucamonga and included .22-caliber rifles, .12-gauge shotguns and .22-caliber and .45-caliber pistols, authorities contended.

He also allegedly stole more than $7,000 worth of jewelry and some cellphones, prosecutors alleged.

Hays passed the guns on to a Moreno Valley man who sold them illegally, the indictment contended.

Some of the guns have been recovered, said Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office in Los Angeles.

“Certainly it is not representative of the integrity of our organization and the performance of our drivers and we took swift action,” said Susan Rosenberg, a spokeswoman at UPS Inc.’s Atlanta headquarters.

The company has been cooperating with federal investigators for more than two years and Hays was fired more than 1 ½ years ago, she said.

The indictment charges Hays and Dennis Dell White Jr., 35, with conspiracy; theft of firearms; receipt and possession of stolen firearms and theft, receipt, and possession of interstate and foreign shipments. They could face up to 10 years in federal prison if convicted on the weapons charges alone.

White is also charged with being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.

White was not arrested but he is expected to surrender later to face the charges, according to Mrozek.

They could face up to 10 years in federal prison if convicted on the weapons charges alone.

So stupid to risk your job, your reputation, your stability for a small immediate cash payout. The fact that this adds guns into our society that will be in the hands of those we state shouldn’t have them makes it even worse.

UPS drivers make good money too, can’t believe he was so stupid to risk all that for a little money on the side.

Money seems to be the religion du jour.

And they really hustle their asses off for it, and as I told our UPS guy as he bounded effortlessly up the stairs with yet another package for the semi-invalid on the second floor, I simply don’t know where he gets the stamina.

Probably the most unrealistic aspect of the not-particularly-funny sitcom “King of Queens” is the portly Kevin James as a faux-UPS driver– UPS guys just don’t come that doughy.

Incidentally, though your UPS guy will politely decline a tip, feel free to show your appreciation with an ice-cold soft drink or a cookie or two; they love that.

        Go safely, brave delivery heroes!

I’m an accountant so I occasionally find fraud or embezzlement. It amazes me that someone making a decent living will jeopardize that by stealing $13,000 or some relatively small amount of money. Just stupid. Sometimes I’ve wondered if it’s the thrill of it, like a shoplifter who doesn’t even need the item they’re stealing.

In todays day and age of tracking codes, security cameras, and everything else. What was this guy thinking that he would be able to get away with?

Thinking was the least of his skills.
