Turkish PM: Israel Worse Than Hitler

Posted by | July 24, 2014 20:03 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories War & Peace

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan says Israel has “surpassed what Hitler did.”

“I completely stand by my comments,” Erdoğan said through a translator, referring to parallels he drew between Israel and the Nazis last week. “You can see that what Israel does to Palestine, to Gaza right now, has surpassed what Hitler did to them.”

He made sure to clarify that he does not “approve” or “accept” what Hitler did to the Jews during World War II, but added, “Right now we do accept this persecution, this massacre, this genocide by Israel.”

Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported over the weekend that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced Erdoğan’s “anti-Semitic” comments during a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki called Erdogan’s statements “offensive and wrong,” adding that “of course, this kind of provocative rhetoric is unhelpful and distracts from urgent efforts to bring about a cease-fire.”

Erdogan probably just wants to divert attention from himself and his own problems. Time to find somebody that looks bad so he doesn’t look so bad.

      This^ so much.

A Turkish-Squirrel campaign so to speak?

    • Nomad July 26th, 2014 at 06:38

He is pulling a Putin and now attempting to switch positions from Prime Minister to President. Up until now the presidency has been a largely ceremonial role but E. plans (and he has said this openly) to re-shape the presidency to his liking. Constitution or no constitution. Next month is the election and I suppose this announcement- which is his style in its purest form- is directed at the more conservative Islamists in the country. A kind of affirmation of his roots, so to speak. However, talk is cheap and if he really feels so strongly about the matter, he has an army, he has the use of sanctions .. but don’t hold your breath about that. Trade will continue unabated but much more discreetly.

Yes, and he will also have an “October surprise” coming up just before the August elections. (You heard it here first.)

This from a man who is imposing/has been attempting to impose Islamic law in many aspects of Turkish society, one of which has been secular by law since its founding. Playing the Hitler comparison card from anyone, is beyond hyperbole, it’s disgusting.

    • Eric Trommater July 24th, 2014 at 21:14

Being anti-Israel in Turkey is a surefire political winner and just like here in the US politicians are get into pissing matches in which each side accuses the other of being soft and forces them to use harsher and harsher language just to appeal to their base.

    • Nomad July 27th, 2014 at 13:14

I agree. And also you have to note too that there are Turkish Jews too. Driven out from Spain around the time of Columbus, they settled in Turkey. They can’t feel very safe hearing such talk coming from the leader of the country..
The most irritating part is that Mr. E.’s personal prejudices can easily turn into violent action. For some of his followers, a dog whistle is more than enough of a signal. To make remarks like this is – for want of a better word- extremely irresponsible.

Maybe he should have compared what Turkey did to the Armenians…

    • Anomaly 100 July 24th, 2014 at 20:40

Well yes, that really is an issue that needs to be addressed. Still yet, that doesn’t discount what’s happening now.

      • Pistol-Packing July 24th, 2014 at 21:02

That does not surprise me about Turkey… But why do we force these two sides into a cease fire, only for it to be broken time and time again by the same players. Until the Palestinians disavow Hamas, there will never be a negotiated peace where two people can live side by side, and maybe eventually integrated.

        • Anomaly 100 July 24th, 2014 at 21:30

It’s more complicated than that. I have no love for Hamas or Netanyahu. I do love israel and Palestine though. It’s the governments in charge that are amping up the violence. The people (largely) are good in both countries.

          • Pistol-Packing July 24th, 2014 at 21:37

I am friends with both. And have worked with both. I agree about being Largely Good.

            • Anomaly 100 July 24th, 2014 at 21:48

I had a neighbor in NYC, who worked there advocating for a two-state system in which both sides learn to live in peace. I was never envious of her job. She’s an Israeli with a big heart.

              • Pistol-Packing July 25th, 2014 at 06:10

The PEOPLE on both sides, really do just want to live in peace. But there is so much bad blood, it will be very difficult.

In some of the out of the way areas of the country, women are definitely expected to dress modestly but in the city and on TV nearly anything goes!

It is also important to note that this conservative trend is actually retrograde since in the 1970s and 1980s, there was very little difference in styles for women (in urban areas, at least,) in Europe, the USA and Turkey.

That’s a big sore spot for the Turkish leaders, let alone their people. However sad that they deny that they inflicted genocide (IMO), what Israel is doing, while not even on a scale of genocide, is deplorable.

      • Pistol-Packing July 24th, 2014 at 20:59

When somebody pokes you in the eye over and over while shouting they want to kill you. Eventually you are going to hit them over the head with a great big object.. Hamas is to blame as well as every single Arab government that supports them.

This is not that difficult, the more you shout you want to kill me, the less likely I am going to be willing to make a deal with you.

        • The Lochnar July 24th, 2014 at 21:55

These people are shouting that from inside the cage.Israel has put them in. You would do the same in their shoes.

          • burqa July 24th, 2014 at 23:56

            Um, no.
They have only themselves to blame.

The Palestinians ended up with Gaza as part of a land-for-peace deal. They did not hold up their end of the bargain. Instead of building a peaceful, functioning nation they have built a base from which to continue their policy of murdering Jews on as large a scale as possible.
They have never tried nonviolent protest. Groups like Hamas have no interest in peace or being good neighbors. When they have taken the time to try and administer that small piece of land, they have failed miserably to provide even the most basic services. Money has poured in from the rest of the Arab world, but it doesn’t make it to those in need. Rather, the ones at the top skim off millions and stash it in Swiss banks.
The Palestinians are led by kooks with such a blood lust they are willing to get hundreds of their own people killed just in order to kill a few Jews. These leaders are not fit to run a nation even of that size, and are not fit to join the community of nations.

Yet another proof of Godwin’s law only on the international stage. The international press needs to apply the simple rule that only Hitler was Hitler and only Nazis were Nazis. Once someone compares any modern situation to either they lose credibility on that subject. Period. Hyperbole is not acceptable when talking about human lives.

Erkan Gural, head of Turkey’s Young Businessmen Confederation, however, would like to reverse this trend. He called July 21 for imposing sanctions against Israel to do that. “We must impose economic sanctions next to our political power and diplomatic sanctions,” he said. “The business world must intervene showing its economic power and show Israel its strongest reaction.” There has been, however, no such reported decision by the Turkish Foreign Ministry or the Ministry of Economy — to date.
