Madeleine Albright: Israel Is ‘Overdoing’ It

Posted by | July 23, 2014 07:15 | Filed under: Politics Top Stories War & Peace

The former Secretary of State told Wolf Blitzer that Israel is “overdoing” it in Gaza.

“I do think the point has to be made, if rockets are being shot at Israel, that Israel does have a right to defend itself,” Albright said. “But the bottom line is the question of proportionality.”

Blitzer singled out her use of the word “proportionality,” asking Albright if she believes Israelis are “overreacting to the provocation” from Hamas. “Are they going too far when you use the word proportionality?” he asked.

“I do think it’s very hard to watch the number of Palestinians that are being killed, innocents. It is hard to dispute the fact that, as Prime Minister Netanyahu has said, that, in fact, there are innocents being put in the way in order to act as shields,” she said. “But the bottom line is, I think that this is hurting Israel’s moral authority. I do think that it looks as though they are overdoing, which is why I think there has to be more emphasis on the fact that they have accepted the cease-fire.”

I have learned Hamas became popular among poverty-stricken Palestinians for humanitarian activities like food banks, schools, and medical clinics; as well as earning a reputation for being free of corruption with a $70 million annual budget. I don’t know where that money comes from? Hamas has been declared a terrorist organization and most governments forbid any financial support, certainly no weapons. And yet here we are then, with one-arm of the monster handing out bread while the other fires a rocket into Israel. I guess if you are starving you might overlook the rocket and hope for the best.

From what I hear Israel is ready to cease fire if Hamas will do likewise. But it seems Hamas has become rabid and like a mad dog, there is only one thing you can do to stop it, kill it! Of course that’s much easier said than done.

The Palestinian people were duped by Hamas. They pretend to be good and do a few good things while carrying out an agenda that has overtones of terrorism in it. It is really disappointing that a people can be oppressed to the point that they can be duped into believing things that aren’t true merely by having food offered to them. If Israel took more responsibility for the plight of the Palestinians and not just shoved them off to the side while taking care of their own self-interests, we wouldn’t be in this mess. Hamas is bad but Israel is complicit through neglect. Two wrongs don’t make a right, this crises is a clear example of that.

Massacre? You really believe what she is saying? When in the history of any war did the attacker warn the people to get out of harms way before they dropped bombs?

They knew that Israel’s response would be strong, so they probably shouldn’t have fired rockets into Israel in the first place.

You really think Hamas is innocent of the blood that has been shed? It is very simple, if Hamas stops lobbing rockets into Israel, they will not have to retaliate. You are on the wrong side of this conflict, unless you’re one of them, an Islamic Jihadist. You’re probably getting your news from Al Jazeera.

Here is the truth about what is going on over there.

By Charles Krauthammer Opinion writer July 17

Israel accepts an Egyptian-proposed Gaza cease-fire; Hamas keeps firing. Hamas deliberately aims rockets at civilians; Israel painstakingly tries to avoid them, actually telephoning civilians in the area and dropping warning charges, so-called roof knocking.

“Here’s the difference between us,” explains the Israeli prime minister. “We’re using missile defense to protect our civilians, and they’re using their civilians to protect their missiles.”

Charles Krauthammer writes a weekly political column that runs on Fridays. View Archive

Rarely does international politics present a moment of such moral clarity. Yet we routinely hear this Israel-Gaza fighting described as a morally equivalent “cycle of violence.” This is absurd. What possible interest can Israel have in cross-border fighting? Everyone knows Hamas set off this mini-war. And everyone knows the proudly self-declared raison d’etre of Hamas: the eradication of Israel and its Jews.

Apologists for Hamas attribute the blood lust to the Israeli occupation and blockade. Occupation? Does no one remember anything? It was less than 10 years ago that worldwide television showed the Israeli army pulling die-hard settlers off synagogue roofs in Gaza as Israel uprooted its settlements, expelled its citizens, withdrew its military and turned every inch of Gaza over to the Palestinians. There was not a soldier, not a settler, not a single Israeli left in Gaza.

And there was no blockade. On the contrary. Israel wanted this new Palestinian state to succeed. To help the Gaza economy, Israel gave the Palestinians its 3,000 greenhouses that had produced fruit and flowers for export. It opened border crossings and encouraged commerce.

No comparison. Hamas is a thug alright, but Israel is no better. It doesn’t want peace. It wants to kill and/or drive out all Palestinians from Gaza and West Bank. Current Israeli government is composed of ultra right wing Jewish parties, so how can it be any better than Islamic Jihadists? Al Jazeera is more balanced than Faux News here. Anybody criticizing Israel instantly becomes Hamas sympathizer right? That’s why all politicians are afraid of saying anything against Israel, and Bibi knows that. I would take anything coming out of neocon and Faux news contributor with a grain of a salt.

No, Israel vacated Gaza in 1994 and forced their own people to leave. Israel has occupied the land for over 3000 years. Who do you think built Jerusalem? Hamas is a terrorist organization and you are trying to defend them for kidnapping, murder, and firing rockets into Israel indiscriminately without regard who gets killed. Consider a little history about those people you have chosen to defend. Read this:

“The Palestinian people does not [sic] exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct “Palestinian people” to oppose Zionism.”

well Bob my comment was made for your name calling if somebody doesn’t agree with you then they are a terrorist. I understand that Israel has a right to protect itself but it looks a little bit like overkill to me. what I suppose you think they should kill the kids because they might grow up to be terrorist and the woman because they might have more terrorist babies.

                • Bob Waas July 24th, 2014 at 13:03

I said a terrorists sympathizer, not a terrorists. Hamas is on the US terrorist list and for a good reason.

Israel’s response is appropriate unless Hamas stops shelling Israel and they continue to to bomb Gaza; which won’t happen.

There is no such thing as overkill in a war. Israel has gone taken great caution in trying to minimize civilian deaths; Hamas is hiding behind women and children and are using their deaths as propaganda against Israel. Read the article by Charles Krauthammer 3rd post below; it best explains the situation.

Glad she is not making decisions for America. What would she like Israel to do, surrender?

Besides providing electricity to Gaza, Israel left them with greenhouses.

In 2005, as Israel withdrew its troops from Gaza and forcibly removed the Jewish residents of the area, a group of Jewish American donors came together to ensure that the famed Israeli greenhouses that produced $200 million of produce per year would not go to waste. The greenhouses were purchased for $14 million – much of it provided by the Gates Foundation – and turned over to Gaza Arabs.

But within hours of the withdrawal, many of the buildings had been damaged beyond repair. Terrorists and looters stripped them of their piping and electronic equipment and tore down their walls. Somegreenhouses remained, several of which were destroyed in a second round of looting in 2006.

You think you can make nice with people like this?

I am no way condoning Hamas for firing rockets at Israel. I have to say that It is my understanding that Israel picked “this” fight with Hamas this time. 3 boys were senselessly murdered, Hamas have not claimed responsibility. I don’t believe I heard any proof that Hamas did it. We just don’t know, it could have been some sick person/s. Israel started bombing Hamas, Hamas obviously retaliated back with firing rockets. Israel declares mass war on densely populated Gaza, fully knowing that Gaza is densely populated and there’s no way they can destroy Hamas nor the tunnels without inflicting thousands of casualties..absolutely NO WAY!. I agree with her, share her sentiments. Israel will just have a lot , I mean a lot of blood on their hands….they will have to live (hopefully happily ever after?) with that. They are looking like bullies in the eye of the world. So carry on Israel!!! I expect a lot of reaction to this…just my 2 cents!
