James Garner Dies At 86

Posted by | July 20, 2014 11:31 | Filed under: Top Stories

Garner was best known for “The Rockford Files.” He died of natural causes.

Garner was one of the first actors to amass success in both television and film … and he starred in a long list of classic films — as well as a co-starring role in the ’94 big screen version of “Maverick” starring Mel Gibson. Garner was the original Bret Maverick from 1957-1960 … as well as the same character in a short lived ’80s remake.

Garner, who never graduated high school, was a veteran of the Korean War, fighting with the 5th Regimental Combat Team of the 24th Infantry Division during the first Chinese intervention. His unit suffered 80% casualties and he was wounded twice.

Dang never knew that, so much about some of our heros on the screen or playing field they just didn’t brag about. Yogi Berra was a coxswain on a ‘rocket boat’ on the D-Day Invasion.

As much as I enjoyed the old show Maverick on Sunday night, there was a personal downside. When the closing credits started to roll, it was a sign that my weekend was over, and there were no more excuses for avoiding my grandmother’s instructions to get my bath, get ready for bed and be ready for school the next morning.

    RIP Mr. Garner.

Gonna be missed; I still like to catch the occasional Rockford Files ep over lunch, on the local Me-TV station.

RIP Jimbo (Sgt Dennis Becker), Jimmy (Angel Martin), Jim (Beth Davenport), Rockfish (Gandy Fitch), Sonny (Joseph “Rocky” Rockford). Let me know if I missed any others.

A last Answering Machine gag to see you off: Hey Jimbo. Dennis. Really appreciate the help on the income tax. You wanna help on the audit now?
