Gym Teacher Suspended For Twerking With Students

Posted by | July 11, 2014 20:11 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories

This is a big no-no. A teacher should strive to be a mentor and a positive influence on students’ lives. This does not mean, however, that a teacher should engage in the sexually provocative, hip-thrusting dance with students.

Courtney Spruill, a physical education and history teacher and girls’ soccer coach, was suspended on July 1st without pay for drinking vodka with and twerking with the students at a girls’ soccer team party. Investigators also viewed a video of Spruill receiving a lap dance from one of the students at the party.

According to the party host, Spruill brought vodka as a housewarming gift. How thoughtful of her!

I sooo don’t want to see her twerk. (I twerk with our readers but I’m not a teacher so don’t judge me)

What it is with these teachers and no common sense, I really do not get it at all??

Anyone remember the song “Hot For Teacher” by Van Halen?

I love how you completely glaze over the “drinking vodka she provided with students” and “getting a lapdance from students” bits and express your outrage over the fact that she dared TWERK with them. It’s a fucking dance, get over it. If THAT’S the reason you think she deserves to be reprimanded, you need to sort out your priorities.

      What?

      • burqa July 11th, 2014 at 20:43

He said it was “a fucking dance.”
It seems Mr. Shackleford approves of teachers and students dancing in this manner, just no booze or lapdancing. Mr. Shackleford has standards, after all.

It quite literally IS a “fucking dance”.

          • CB July 11th, 2014 at 22:39

            It’s actually not.

            I agree with Rusty.

Drinking and driving is a far worse thing to be doing around students than dancing suggestively.

One will get you killed. The other won’t.

            • burqa July 11th, 2014 at 23:46

How about no drinking and driving around students and no “fucking dancing” around them by authority figures being paid to educate adolescents trying to come to grips with puberty, hmmm?

              • CB July 12th, 2014 at 00:25

Yes, I agree that erotic dancing around students is probably a bad idea.

If you think erotic dancing was the greater crime in this story, your priorities could not possibly be more out of whack.

                Drinking and driving kills people.

                Erotic dancing does not.

Can kids in middle school drive? grades 5-8. These kids are young. This is more like pedophilia. So much wrong here I don’t really know how to determine what is worse and don’t really want to.

                  • CB July 13th, 2014 at 02:37

“Can kids in middle school drive?”

No, but they can die when they hitch a ride with a drunken teacher. Did you read the actual source?

I don’t know what kind of dancing this teacher was engaging in, but I find it hard to believe it was endangering these children more than that…

It looked to me like the host of the party took the vodka away and it was never opened. Supposedly Spruill only drank soda.

Maybe I am missing something but I don’t see in any of the linked articles where she drove anybody home. The reports are conflicting on what she was drinking. The evidence from video is twerking taking place. One thing I have learned is kids will say just about anything sometimes to stay out of trouble. I am more interested in the evidence. Not that I am dismissing the allegations but they are just allegations at this point. Need more info.

What besides alcohol might motivate a teacher to twerk on her students?

…I’m also not seeing how being at a party with alcohol would get the kids in less trouble than being at a party without alcohol…

We didn’t have “fucking dances” when I went to school. Poor me, all I got was a fine education from the best school system in the country – – – – – – somehow.

            • Rusty Shackleford July 12th, 2014 at 01:06

Please. Parents have been getting up in arms about how overly sexual these newfangled dances are for generations, or have we already forgotten about Elvis Presley’s hip-thrusts?

    • Eric Trommater July 11th, 2014 at 22:04

As the father of a 10 year old girl I find the twerking to be a worse violation that the vodka. Those with daughters who grew up with Hannah Montana will understand. Twerking is a gateway drug and needs to be nipped in the bud. It is an abomination and a growing epidemic which, if left unchecked will lead the youth of our nation down the evil path toward destruction!

I placed no priorities, I pointed out something I believe to be wrong. Please quote the passage in my post that indicates I believe drinking and driving a lesser crime than a teacher “fuck dancing” with students.
I clearly stated I believe both to be wrong.
This is quite clear to me.

When authority figure being paid to educate adolescents struggling to understand and properly deal with puberty, I see that as clearly being deplorable, while you seem unsure, calling it “probably a bad idea.”

                  • CB July 14th, 2014 at 23:11

It was more about the re-reporting of the story than your priorities.

The source makes it clear she was alleged to have been drinking and driving. This piece focuses entirely on her “twerking”.

                    • burqa July 14th, 2014 at 23:42

I see your point and pretty much agree with it. I think with a little more thought you’ll come to a more concrete conclusion about the twerking.
This story reminds me of an occasion when I was a kid and walked into the living room where my father was watching a western on the TV. I asked him who the good guys were and he just chuckled and said they were all bad in that one.
This teacher’s actions likewise were all bad. One may be Lee van Cleef bad and the other Eli Wallach bad and another Gian Maria Volonte bad. They’re all bad and I hope we can agree that this woman needs psychological help and should be prevented from having a position of authority where children are involved.

This is something of an entertainment medium and stories like this get tossed in to spice things up, attract and hold attention of viewers.
In a country with as many people as ours has, there will never be a shortage of kook stories.
Me, I like me some dumb criminal stories.
Again, I think your point is a solid one.

                    • CB July 16th, 2014 at 19:23

Heck, if the children could be encouraged to twerk, I could see that actually being positive!

With rates of obesity what they are, any activity is probably a good thing… and my guess is that they’re doing it anyhow.

…but it should be in a dance class, not at a drunken party.

You are correct, there is something seriously flawed about this woman’s judgement.
