Israel tells their enemies that they will respond to any attacks promptly and powerfully.

They are under constant attacks from Islamic governments who think Israel does not have the right to exist. Israel cannot afford to be passive when it comes to defending their country.

    • tiredoftea July 11th, 2014 at 20:59

Yes, killing women, children and unarmed, uninvolved men sure gives them the high moral ground.

      • Bob Waas July 11th, 2014 at 22:50

What would your response be if your neighbors lobbed 600 rockets into your yard, with no regard for the harm it may cause to you and your family?
Remember who started this conflict; they are the ones responsible for the deaths and injuries to both sides.

        • tiredoftea July 11th, 2014 at 22:55

My response would be the same as anyone else’s. But, Israel has an uneven advantage and has used it to ill effect to deprive Palestinians from living decent and honorable lives. It has become what they have historically claimed they abhor, a terrorist state.

          • Bob Waas July 11th, 2014 at 23:40

I’m not sure that Israel has an advantage; considering they are surrounded by those who hate them and who terrorizes them on a frequent basis. If you want to have peace with someone, you need to be peaceful.

            • tiredoftea July 11th, 2014 at 23:43

Good point. As a client state armed and financed by the U.S. with a weapons arsenal of overwhelmingly superior firepower, Israel can go first.

              • Bob Waas July 12th, 2014 at 00:00

I’m not sure what you mean about Israel going first. As for Israel being supported by the US, yes they are and for good reason. They are the only democracy in the middle east and have always been our most loyal ally. There is not another country in the area who we can trust, even though we give many of them foreign aid.

                • tiredoftea July 12th, 2014 at 00:06

                  That comment wasn’t difficult.

he Palestinians voted, but we didn’t like the outcome. Egypt voted, but we didn’t like the outcome.

Yes, capturing an Israeli employed spy with state secrets makes them really trustworthy friends.

                  • Bob Waas July 12th, 2014 at 00:41

Spying? You mean like we do to all our allies? Germany has just expelled our station chief for questionable behavior.
You and I may look at the two sides differently, but I will stand with Israel because I trust them more.

                    • tiredoftea July 12th, 2014 at 00:56

They can only be trusted to continue their oppressive ways, putative democracy or not.

                    • Bob Waas July 12th, 2014 at 11:26

Everyday it is a battle against the evils of those who hate them. I don’t fault them for being overly vigilant.

I don’t understand why you have a problem with a country who is fighting to survive. What would you suggest they do?

                    • tiredoftea July 12th, 2014 at 12:48

Perhaps they can show a little humanity to those who have lost their homes and country rather than label them as terrorists without regard to the facts. Their so called fight for survival is a self made problem that comes from their belligerence by their national leaders.

                    • Bob Waas July 12th, 2014 at 15:22

How do you show humanity to those who have no respect for human life?

You are either enormously naïve or are suffering from a major case of denial to not know that Hamas IS a terrorist group and is on the state dept list. http://www.state.gov/j/ct/rls/other/des/123085.htm

                    • tiredoftea July 12th, 2014 at 21:52

Your premise is the one that has led the parties to this point. I have enormous sympathy for both sides and refuse to believe that people with so much in common can only lob bombs and fire rockets into each other’s homes and consider that a solution. It hasn’t worked, and won’t any time in the future.

Once each side steps back from labeling the other as “having no respect for human life” and feels their common humanity, perhaps a solution that both parties can live with will be found.

I know this, Golda Meir, Albert Einstein and many other Jewish/Israeli leaders of the 60’s and 70’s would not have taken Israel to the condition it is now. They had the wisdom and strength to resist using force, denying basic human rights and taking land and property as is being done now.

                    • Bob Waas July 12th, 2014 at 22:24

Did you miss the part where our State Department designated Hamas as a terrorist group? You cannot play nice with terrorists.

Since you seem to have a soft spot in your heart for Hamas, perhaps you can tell them to stop firing rockets into Israel and they will stop bombing you.

                    • tiredoftea July 12th, 2014 at 22:35

I know that over 100 Palestinians have died this weekend by Israeli weapons. I know that Israel killed 167 in 2012 and 1166 Palestinians in 2008-2009. Damned few of them were Hamas, just ordinary men, women and children. That’s a damned sight more than defense by Israle. That’s terrorism by my count.

I know that your new found regard for our State Department is insincere, at best.

You seem to enjoy backing bullies. My “soft spot” is for human beings to act like human beings. There might still be hope for you, if you can find your humanity.

                    • Bob Waas July 12th, 2014 at 22:46

What were the circumstances regarding those that Israel killed? If it was in response to being fired upon with rockets then they got what they deserved. Israel is not a bully, they are defending themselves.

I have no idea what you would do if you had to make decisions for the defense of America based on your view on the mid-east conflict.

I asked before, so I’ll ask again. What would your response be if Mexico or Canada fired rockets into our cities?

                    • M D Reese July 12th, 2014 at 23:13

Depends. What did we do to provoke them? Build “settlements” in British Columbia? Blockade Mexico’s supply lines?

            • fahvel July 12th, 2014 at 03:43

maybe don’t move into their neighborhood and then totally ignore them and act as if god gave you the dirt upon which to build after killing the residents already there?

              • Bob Waas July 12th, 2014 at 11:07

Read the history books and find out who owns what land.

It is sad that you support Hamas firing rockets indiscriminately into Israel without regard who gets killed, but refuse to support Israel when they retaliate. You must be an anti-Semite.

      • John Tarter July 12th, 2014 at 07:00

Well, maybe if Hamas had not started it all by killing three Jews and then rocketing Israel all those people would still be alive. You reap what you sow and Hamas and those who support them are getting what they deserve.

        • Carla Akins July 12th, 2014 at 07:25

So you are saying this is an appropriate response?

          • Bob Waas July 12th, 2014 at 11:03

It is an absolute response when you are fighting for your survival. You can’t afford to be passive and wait for diplomacy to work because those whom they are dealing with are not honorable when it comes to honoring peace agreements.

            • Carla Akins July 12th, 2014 at 11:58

I believe both sides will tell you they are fighting for their very survival. Annihilation really doesn’t seem to be the answer here and neither side has shown themselves to be trustworthy.

              • Bob Waas July 12th, 2014 at 12:21

Every conflict starts with someone attacking the other. Hamas started this one, so they get what they deserve in response.

Israel is our most trustworthy ally in the region. None other compare.

                • Carla Akins July 12th, 2014 at 12:46

then we should be fine with their actions? Sorry, I don’t find this type of response acceptable from any allies.

                  • Bob Waas July 12th, 2014 at 15:13

Are you saying that Hamas shooting rockets into Israel is okay, but Israel responding in kind is wrong? What would be your response if Mexico or Canada did the same thing to the USA?

    • M D Reese July 12th, 2014 at 23:22

The Arabs place targets among civilians to generate stories such as this.
Still, the cycle of retaliation needs to stop.
Efforts to establish Palestine by attacking Israel began when the Arabs had all the West bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. They never tried nonviolence.
This does not mean the Israelis have done no wrong, but the violent factions among the Palestinians always make sure no peace deals are made.
Deepening the tragedy is the fact that the basic deal the Palestinians have been rejecting for years is essentially the same deal they offered the Israelis, who rejected it beginning circa 1974…

As long as the Palestinians, as a people, allow groups like Hamas that think violence will solve their problems, to coexist with them, there will be no peace. The Palestinians, as a people, as a culture, need to reject violence and the groups that rely on it, if they ever truly want to live in peace.

    • tiredoftea July 11th, 2014 at 21:06

No, can’t be part of the blame the victims in this international tragedy. The Palestinians have been push aside, ghettoized, denied human rights, denied jobs and peace and their own country, never mind their rights to self defense.

Israel is and has been a bully because it has been an international darling since its inception in 1938. The middle east has been tipped against the Arab nations by the West for a very long time.

Oil is our only interest there, not human rights, not democracy, not fairness for all. Simple commerce at the cost of untold horror for all is too high a price to pay. But, we only pay the price at the gas pump. The citizens of Palestine, in particular, pay a much higher price for our oil.

      • Nicholas Russell Harris July 11th, 2014 at 23:24

This all started in 1918 with the death of the Ottoman Empire and the plans of American and European Imperialists.

So now the Jews want to make their own Holocaust against another people….”the opressed will always become the next oppressors. ” It doesn’t help either that Israel was illegally created (against the U.N.’s own rules) and a whole poeple were shoved out and basically told to go die in the desert because this land “Biblically belonged to the European Jews”. Jews which I might add had never seen or lived in the Holy Land for nearly a THOUSAND years. . .

Read the book “Lawrence in Arabia” to see more information.

Thank you! A lot of people these days haven’t got a clue about the history of the region in modern times.

          • Nicholas Russell Harris July 13th, 2014 at 01:07

            Thank you for your compliment.

Even as a kid (I’m 23 now) I wanted to be a history teacher. Therefore I strive to have the CORRECT information to repudiate false information and to be able to be an intelligent and informed member of my society. Plus I just love history.

Back in HS I started researching the modern Middle East and was fascinated to find that Standard Oil, the UK, France, and Italy ALL created the messed up systems we see today. . .these conflicts are all the product of Capitalist Greed and a system of Client States and Imperial Colonies doomed the 20th and now 21st Century to a near endless conflict.

            • M D Reese July 13th, 2014 at 21:58

I don’t remember a lot of the details of what I learned, but my take-away is that the colonial powers (mostly white Europeans) really made a flipping mess in every corner of the globe that they conquered. Africa was colonized and forced to provide crops for the colonizers (like cotton or similar) rather than foods to meet the needs of their own population. I over simplify, but it’s the reason for a lot of problems we are dealing with today. Religious domination is another angle. Also, grouping different societies together in a geographic area that never existed naturally–well, I’m preaching to the choir. I’m glad that you are interested in the facts, and getting them out there.

      • M D Reese July 12th, 2014 at 23:19

Another factor is the involvement of our own christian extremists who insist that we prop up Israel no matter what because they believe that the Middle East must blow up and bring on Armageddon so that christ will return and yadayadayada. They don’t want peace either.

Yes, their interest in Israel is entirely delusional as the center of the apocalypse.

and hamas is more offensive than land stealing occupying isreal? Deep down it’s an ethnic thing – hamas and all groups that seem similar over there tend not to be euro white so who gets supported by the west? Whitey, like it or not.

You could say the same for the Israeli Jews. If the people in that region really wanted peace, they’d have it by now. Religion screws up everything.

As long as the Palestinians, as a people, allow groups like Hamas that think violence will solve their problems, to coexist with them, there will be no peace. The Palestinians, as a people, as a culture, need to reject violence and the groups that rely on it, if they ever truly want to live in peace.

Another factor is the involvement of our own christian extremists who insist that we prop up Israel no matter what because they believe that the Middle East must blow up and bring on Armageddon so that christ will return and yadayadayada. They don’t want peace either.
