Federal Court Lifts Ban On Driver’s Licesnes For Undocumented DREAMers

A federal appeals court in Arizona halted Governor Jan Brewer’s ban on driver’s licenses for those who came here as children but have been given executive permission to stay in the United States.

In May 2013, a U.S. District Court judge rejected immigration advocates’ arguments that the policy violated federal law. However, the judge noted that Arizona continued to grant other immigrants who didn’t qualify for DACA driver’s licenses, suggesting the state was treating people unequally.

Late last summer, Arizona altered the program and said it would stop issuing driver’s licenses to all people who receive deportation deferrals, not just young people who qualified under DACA.

The court still found the policy resulted in unequal treatment, however.

    And today, we have thousands more coming here as children. Warm up the presses, we’ll need a lot more drivers licences in the next ten years.

      I just hate drivers. Citizens, non-citizens, white, black, young, old – people get behind the wheel and become aggressive, compassionless narcissists. I say off with their heads.

    A driver’s license is a state issue and the Federal government should have no say in the matter. Governor Brewer should tell this Judge to butt out and mind his own federal business.

      Unequal treatment under the law was the basis for the decision.

      Unequal treatment under the law whether it is federal, state, or county is most certainly in the purview of the federal court system. It was the fundamental legal concept in Brown v Board of Education.

      Amazing how you right wingers have no sense of objectivity or perspective. All you do is whine when your cause loses in court, without taking a few moments to look at the decision and determine whether it is in complete agreement with over 60 years of legal precedent, which this decision most certainly is.

        OK arc you have read at least part of the 14th Amendment:
        ” . . . nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

        But John is simply stating the way he thinks the world “should” be. No reason to get so snarky at John.

    If the ‘illegals’ were treated as they should be and deported, this would not be an issue. Of course, if the border had been secured as Congress promised when Reagan signed the amnesty bill, there would be much less of a problem with illegals now. Protecting the citizens is one of he few items the president and congress must do according to the Constitution. It’s way past time for them to secure the border and protect us.
