Putin Tells Obama He Wants Better Relations

In a statement published on the Kremlin website on Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin told President Obama in an Independence Day message that he hopes the countries can improve relations.

I see right wing heads exploding over this:

In his message of congratulations, Mr Putin said that he hopes that ties between the two countries, which have a rich history, will continue successful development on a pragmatic and equal basis despite the current differences and difficulties.

The President also stressed that Russia and the United States are both countries bearing particular responsibility for ensuring international stability and security and should therefore cooperate not just for the benefit of their own peoples but also in the entire world’s interest.

Mr Putin said it is important to build bilateral relations based on mutual respect and genuine consideration of each other’s interests.

Maybe if he actually meant it, Putin and Obama could be BFFs. However, after invading Ukraine, the Russian President and former KGB agent seems more like Dick Cheney’s kind of guy. Putin is yearning for Obama but his only friends here are Republicans. That’s got to hurt.

Strangely absent is an Independence Day message to Ukraine’s new president, Petro Poroshenko, who wasn’t as easily bribed as Viktor Yanukovych.

On Friday, Poroshenko signed a deal with Europe, which essentially destroys Russia’s plan of resurrecting the Soviet Union, thus striking a huge blow against Putin. Afterward, the Ukrainian president called it “the most important day” for his country since its 1991 independence.

Happy Independence Day, President Porshenko.

I dunno–I really wouldn’t want to have tea and crumpets with Vlad. He is not a nice person.

Nice or not, this indicates that the sanctions are working.

How you like new strategy, Natasha? We make nice to Moose and Squirrel. Everyone in Frostbite Falls like us again. Then? We lower the boom!

That might very well be the best word induced visual I have ever read. And bonus. It didn’t get me in nearly as much trouble as the time I was caught by faculty goading a Russian exchange student “C’mon Mikael, just once…pleeeease? say must get moose and squirrel..please?”

Do you think Putin has maybe just realized he was sucked in by a really lame bro-mance pick up line during the George years? He might be bitter. This might be a grudge romance he’s trying to cultivate.
