Young Americans Care More About World Cup Than VA, Iraq, IRS: Pew Study

Pew has come out with numbers that show Americans between the ages of 18-29 care more about the World Cup than other, more important events.

Of the Americans in that age bracket surveyed by Pew, 24% said they were following the World Cup “very closely.” 15% said the same for the VA story, while those numbers were 13% for the violence in Iraq and just 10% for the IRS missing emails investigation. The numbers for the 2014 midterm elections and recent Supreme Court rulings were even lower.

 

Even Older Americans care too much about the World Cup:

When Americans of all age groups were included, the World Cup did not come out on top. Instead, the VA backlog garnered the most attention at 28%, followed by Iraq at 25%, the IRS at 21% and then the World Cup at 17%.

    As I approach 70 I feel no remorse in aging, so far I missed the worst war in world history, the worst depression the economy has known and have suffered no great natural catastrophe. If I make it to 85 the age my parents died, I don’t think I’ll be able to keep that streak going. Peace.

      folks of your generation have grown up in and lived through some of the best the usa has ever had and it’s so sad that at this end of the trail things begin to suck – sometimes the good old days expression is real.

      I’m in my 60’s too. My late mother was a teacher and when confronted with situations like this she used to say; “this is a teaching moment”. Of course it annoyed me as a kid, but in the long run young people are really not interested in important issues that affect them unless they are informed, enlightened and motivated. It’s our job now because young people are amazing when they understand the issues and are given a chance to contribute to society.

    It’s sad that today’s youth couldn’t care less about what’s happening in government. They’re way to busy worrying about what the Kardishians are doing.
    I blame the media. Government activities don’t make headlines, but come up with another Terry Schiavo case, and the press’ll be all over it 24/7.

    I blame the media. Government activities don’t make headlines, but come up with another Terry Schiavo case, and the press’ll be all over it 24/7.
