Woman Joins Kids’ Water Gun Fight–Shooting REAL Gun

Posted by | June 24, 2014 17:05 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories

A Pennsylvania woman opened fire with a real gun as she joined children playing with water guns.

Residents of the block told police that four children were playing with squirt guns on the sidewalk when one of their neighbors, Billie Jo George, pulled out a real handgun and started pointing it at the kids, according to court documents.

One of the neighbors reacted by yelling to George, “What are you doing with a real gun! Why are you pointing it at my kids? They are only kids!” according to court documents.

The woman then ran inside her home and called police, and while inside, she said she heard a loud “pop.”

Other witnesses told police that George, standing on her porch and pointing the gun at the street, fired a round.

George, 24, was subsequently arrested and charged with four counts of recklessly endangering another person, discharge of firearms, propulsion of missiles onto roadways and disorderly conduct. She was committed to the Berks County Jail on $75,000 bail.

Challenge: describe the gun law that would have prevented this.

mental competence restrictions on her ability to purchase a handgun! Unlikely to be her first unbalanced action.

Seriously? You’re fine with allowing every crazy person who wants a gun to own a gun?

in my state even if an officer unholsters his weapon with kids around Would face serious consequences up to and including losing his job.
Firing off a round would certainly put him on the unemployment line

The question is not what gun law would have prevented this because indeed no law would have. The question is under what/which law(s) will she be prosecuted?

So what this knuckledragger is trying to suggest is that because no law will prevent something from happening, we should eliminate all laws. Tell me please, Mr. Neanderthal, what law prevents someone from running a red light and striking the vehicle that you and your family is riding in with such force that someone dies?

Given the high probability of mental health issues in this woman a psych evaluation (as they have in Japan) could have barred her from owning a gun. A national gun registry could have pointed authorities to the seller who could be sanctioned for selling a gun discharged illegally thereby ensuring gun dealers are very sketchy about selling guns to crazy people. A national gun registry could also identify black market purchases by reconciling registered guns versus who they are sold to. Checking affiliations could lend some insight into possible political extremism thereby barring her from purchasing a gun. If the gun is registered to someone else they can face sanctions for straw purchasing or giving a crazy person a gun. Finally, if the gun is stolen she can face additional charges thereby guaranteeing a longer sentence. Any of these measures could have prevented her from purchasing a gun….oh and raising the cost of bullets and locking in how many guns a person can own can weed out crazies simply because insane people often compile arsenals. So, what do I win?

As a gun owner and supporter of gun carry, I will say she is the type that scares me. We need strong enforcement to punish (or in this case, medicate) the individual responsible.
