Missouri Town Bans Open Carry of Guns Because it’s Bad for Tourism (via Americans Against The Tea Party)

In a 4-2 vote on Tuesday, a southwest Missouri community has taken a sensible approach to firearms safety and banned the open carry of guns, according to a report from the Missourian. Thanks to a Missouri state law that allows cities to regulate the…

How does removing open carried guns make this town safer? Better they would remove the criminals and the guns would be no problem.

    • Shades June 13th, 2014 at 22:33

You’re missing the point. It’s not about making the town safer, it’s about the tourists being scared off by the open carry crowd. We’re talking about crowded sidewalks full of families with small children squeezing through groups of people to get from one attraction to another. People don’t want to drag their kids through groups of guys with guns slung across their back.

      • Sam Freedom June 18th, 2014 at 05:48

MD REESE just accused open carry ppl of being “scared” yet now you’re saying it’s the tourists who are scared. What about freedom? Open carry folks aren’t shooting or threatening anyone. Let the frightened tourists go elsewhere while unafraid ppl who are grateful for the 2nd amendment might make that their destination city.

But you libs never think beyond the easiest most obvious complaint.

MD Reese can only assume that a person would be scared. It’s the only reasonable explanation for terrorizing others, including small children when spending a week at the lake for your summer vacation.
Simply because its your right to do so, does not make the right thing to do. These are families, small business owners, people trying to pay their bills, send their kids to college, their heads above water.
It is absolutely their right to say they don’t want firearms carried around the strip (that’s what its called) scaring paying tourist away. Its a strip of road approx half a mile long – think of it as an open air private store and get over your damn self.

          • Sam Freedom June 19th, 2014 at 08:27

It’s their right to say they don’t want French fries there, too, because it makes people MORBIDLY OBESE and the more obese people and hoverounds there, the more difficult it will be for tourists to walk around comfortably, and kids could be knocked over.

I already know you’ll miss the point and express some faux outrage at my alleged insensitivity… but for those who do get the point, it doesn’t matter what the locals bitch about, the rights of everyone there matter. And, in case ya hadn’t noticed, any time there’s a massacre somewhere, they person isn’t walking around town with a rifle on their back…. they have it under a trench coat or in a duffle back or the trunk of a car.

Try to join us in the real world some day, would ya?

            • Carla Akins June 19th, 2014 at 08:31

Morbid obesity won’t bury a town’s economy. Studies and even watching the news on occasion will tell you open carry does not stop massacre’s just tourists.

  2. Sam Freedom June 13th, 2014 at 18:52

Its temporary. There’s no evidence that open carry leads to violence. And this article was written by a clueless propagandist who ignores the facts – places that have more gun control have more crime.

If ppl are scared, educate them… but don’t trample the constitution to coddle them.

    • Shades June 13th, 2014 at 22:36

No this article was read by a clueless person who thinks this is about controlling crime. It’s about scaring off the tourists with small children who have to maneuver through the heavy summer crowds on the sidewalk. The town needs the tourist money or it will cease to exist.

when will gun fetishists realize that laws protecting public order and safety do not trample the Constitution.

try walking down the main street in your hometown at high noon wearing nothing but a pair of tennis shoes. when the police arrest you and take you to court, tell the judge that your first amendment rights are being violated because God told you that clothing is sinful.

let us know how that works out for you.

    • M D Reese June 14th, 2014 at 00:33

If “ppl” are so scared that they feel they have to carry assault-style rifles down to the soda shop, then they should get help. They are ill. We don’t need to coddle them–we need to treat them. The rest of us have rights too.

Firearms enthusiasts run the gamut from competitive shooting, hunting and genuine appreciation for such magnificent design and construction. This is a tourist trap town. They have to survive year-round on tourist money from the summer months. I lived here for almost 10 years so I know the place like the back of my hand. The strip has the usual souvenir and fudge shops, jet ski rentals and putt putt golf. It’s very family oriented but it’s also big with the college kids who don’t have the money to fly to Cancun for spring break. The streets are busy all summer long and packed shoulder to shoulder on weekends. My point is, if people don’t want their kids weaving in and out of groups of guys with their penis extenders strapped across their back, they’ll go somewhere else and the loss of revenue will kill the town.
