Controversy Around Bowe Bergdahl’s Actions Prior To His Capture

There are suggestions that Bowe Bergdahl deserted his army unit in protest.

…as the U.S. government negotiated his release, in exchange for five members of the Taliban who were being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, many have asked whether the 28-year-old will be viewed as a hero or a deserter…

Several soldiers left angry messages on the Army Times Facebook page in the hours after Bergdahl’s release, calling him a ‘deserter’ and a ‘sympathizer’.

One post, by Stephen Kirouac, claimed that Bergdahl’s ‘fellow soldiers were affected by his actions’.

‘He is a sympathizer and deserves to be tried for desertion,’ Kirouac’s post read, according to the Navy Times.

Others left messages saying that whatever the circumstances surrounding Bergdahl’s capture, it should be remembered that the soldier had been through a lengthy ordeal.

‘This guy may have made a tremendously bad decision, but I’m willing to bet that what he’s endured since then has been far worse than anything the US or military judicial system would have imposed … have some heart,’ a post by Mark Delano read.

Alan you beat me to it. I was sampling various reports about Sgt. Bergdahl’s release on a number of local and national media outlets online. My first observation was the conspicuous absence of comments from the usual crew of congenital Obama-haters. Perhaps they were still busy looking for some way to criticize the President on this, even in the wake of the jubilant response to the news in Bergdahl’s hometown in the very red state of Idaho.

I did come across one or two comments talking about the sergeant as a deserter and a traitor, and I wondered if this would be the next right wing talking point to condemn the President; e.g. he sacrificed the security of the country on behalf of a traitor.

Looks like we need wonder no more. Let us see how the Romney landslide birth certificate crowd proceeds to construct a new fiction in pursuit of their relentless, irrational hatred of the President.

FB has lots of these memes floating around. Some people who flunked history have insisted, never before in the history of this country, have we negotiated with terrorists, that he should have been shot in the back as he wandered from the base, on and on. I suspect, in time, we’ll know what happened and appropriate measures will be taken then. Who knows what frame of mind he was in at the time. Congressional republicans angry they didn’t get 30 days notice of the Gitmo releases. I guess they think he should have stayed imprisoned for an additional month to feed their egos. What it boils down to is there is a group of people that will never be happy so don’t bother trying.

A pro-Obama comment I saw elsewhere, pretty much sums it up.

Paraphrasing, “Small government Republicans outraged at Obama saving a soldier’s life without first filing government paperwork.”

You have got to admit though, that this does send a message to Jihadists everywhere that kidnapping Americans can result in a positive outcome for their side. Was this really a wise move on our part?

If that is the case then surely Saint Ronald Regan the Christ incarnate President – set the precedent by arranging for the Iranian hostages to be kept captive until he was elected then they would be released with all cameras pointing toward him as the weapons flowed to the Iranian terrorists.

He is ours until he renounces his citizenship. We had an obligation to bring him home . After what hes been through I doubt there would ever be any court martial anyway

Whether he did or didn’t doesn’t matter as he suffered a worse punishment then he would have received as a deserter.

Hey, and didn’t his father praise “Allah” In Arabic at the press conference with the President? This whole thing seems fishy to me. But I guess sooner or later the truth will come out.

no need to put Allah in quotes . Whats that got to do with anything? The only people who care are on rightwing hate Obama sites. The Daily caller seems to bash the Taliban one second and then take them at their word the next.

Anything to bash the black president huh
