A group of Italian women in loving relationships with priests are asking Pope Francis to end the requirement that priests take vows of celibacy.

The women, who met through a Facebook campaign, wrote to the Pope requesting a meeting to put forward their case, claiming they were just “a small sample” of the many partners of priests “living in silence”.

“We love these men, they love us, and in most cases, despite all efforts to renounce it, one cannot manage to give up such a solid and beautiful bond,” they wrote.

“We humbly place our suffering at your feet in the hope that something may change, not just for us, but for the good of the entire Church,” added the unnamed women in the letter that was first reported by the website Vatican Insider…

Some 6,000 parish priests who have left the priesthood to wed now live in Italy, compared to a total of 33,000 parish priests currently in service.

Pope Francis has previously supported the tradition of celibacy, but has suggested his position might waiver..

When you start allowing me to make decision concerning you and your wife how you spend your money. What church you will go to who you will elect when you allow me to do this then I shall support your cause.

Until there is action, the words he says means nothing to me any more. I think it’s a PR trick and it’s working to take the some of the heat off them for the child abuse scandal.
This is why his predecessor stepped down, to have this guy try to change the “face” of the church.

The abolition of slavery began with words.

Women obtaining the right to vote began with words.

No positive change in society occurs without beginning with words.

Your naysaying accomplishes nothing other than providing aid and comfort to those who want to maintain the status quo.

I am so shocked people continue to defend the church. He has not changed a thing in the written doctrine of the church. All words so far. The effort to placate the masses seems to be working. This is not about rights – it’s about criminal actions by the church members that goes all the way to the top.

Are you equating sexual child abuse to slavery, as if to say it was once an OK practice because society accepted it or no one did anything about it? Are you saying society accepts sexual child abuse now and that positive words are the beginnings of the change?
I understand some who might want to defend the church but you better come up with something better than your lame excuses as an argument. Shame on you.

I noticed you didn’t reply to my last post when you replied to my comments with something similar. Here, I submit this to you again.

“So it’s OK to not turn people over to the cops with the evidence if you discover there was abuse [crime]? It’s OK to aid and abet after the fact? It’s OK as long as law enforcement doesn’t have enough on them?
Those small steps are only words taken out of context with no actions and are having the desired effect. Where is the action?”

sorry if my responses are not timely enough for you (not really).

I do not appreciate people putting words in my mouth. I think my words speak for themselves.. did I say a word about child abuse being ok? did I say society accepts child abuse?

when you are ready to debate me based on what I actually write instead of your dishonest INTERPRETATION, let me know.

“No positive change in society occurs without beginning with words.”
Specify the change in society that you think should take place, in the context of sexual child abuse.

In the context of sexual child abuse, the society that needs to change is the church structure which ignored or covered up or protected the perpetrators.

what needs to happen is zero tolerance enforced from the highest levels of the Vatican on down to the local parish around the world.

now you specify to me how that can happen without beginning with words.

I agree words to that effect would be a start but he hasn’t said such words. It took him over a year to publicly acknowledge the atrocities. It doesn’t seem to be as important as protecting the church.

So the sign that a criminal society is going to change it’s ways is words? Do you accept the words so far as sufficient evidence of their intent to come clean?

I think their intent is to protect this despicable society and to not keep the pressure on by giving these platitudes credit is tantamount to accepting their behavior.
