Florida Town Must Decide: Allow Satanic Prayer or Violate Supreme Court

Posted by | May 12, 2014 16:14 | Filed under: Politics Religion Top Stories

The Supreme Court decided recently that prayer is permitted before town council meetings in a case out of Greece, NY. But that means any religion, not just the Christian religion.

Well, a Florida man has decided to exercise this right the Supreme Court has given towns across the United States by asking the town of Deerfield Beach, Florida to open their meetings with a Satanic prayer. Wait, that’s not what conservatives meant when they said “religious freedom”?

Chaz Stevens, who is known for forcing Florida to erect an 8-foot-tall Festivus pole made of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer cans next to the town’s nativity scene, has essentially put the town in the precarious position of either allowing a satanic prayer to be said before one of the town’s meetings or violating the Supreme Court’s ruling pertaining to this issue.

Stevens said, “I just want equal billing. We allow various religious nutjobs to give a prayer. They pray to Jesus who is make-believe, god who is make-believe, why not Satan who is make-believe?”

The guy apparently gets off on pursuing ‘equal rights’, erecting a Festivus pole made of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer cans is a good indicator.

He has a valid point. The constitution says separate church and state and he’s making sure Christianity doesn’t get favored status.

This guy Chaz has my vote. Stick it to em!

I always wonder whether these people who insist on mixing prayer and politics ever stop to consider a scenario where the prayer being said does not represent their beliefs.

Personally I do not have a problem with the prayers as long as all beliefs have the equal opportunity to be a part of the proceedings. But I am not optimistic that those who push for prayer at legislative meetings understand that as far as the first amendment is concerned “Hail Satan” and “Our father who art in heaven” are entirely equal under the law.

belief is a void and it should be eradicated from the functioning of a global form of society even though a global form of society will be the end of the species in a surprisingly short period of time.

I don’t know. Have you SEEN these people?

    • Shades May 12th, 2014 at 18:07

No. They believe Christianity is the only religion. Remember how they freaked out when they discovered school vouchers also covered Muslim schools?

if a weird thunderstorm starts forming and his head starts rotating on his shoulders, will they be able to stop the prayer, or do they have to remain with heads bowed andr silent?

All well and good, but many smaller cities and counties, etc. will not be ‘bothered’ by those challenging the prayers now that the Supremes have ruled.
There’s no valid reason for prayer at government functions.

No – the religious right want to transform the USA into a christian theocracy. We all know how well countries do with a theocratic controlling body. The religious right will also get their wish when this happens because then it will be much safer since everyone will have unfettered access to arms, just like so many other countries run be religious loons.
Of course, as with any theocracy, there will be little consensus as to the interpretation of their holy texts and traditions.
