Keith Crisco, running against Clay Aiken for the Democratic nomination for Congress in North Carolina’s 2nd District, died at age 71 after a fall.

Aiken held a slim lead for the Democratic nomination, with an unofficial tally of 11,649 votes, or 40.8%. Keith Crisco was in second place with 11,277 votes, or 39.5%. In North Carolina, a candidate needs to get more than 40% of the vote to avoid a runoff election.

Clay Aiken, 35, faces an uphill battle in the conservative district that voted for Tea Party-backed Republican incumbent Renee Ellmers 55.9% to 41.4% against her Democratic challenger in 2012. Ellmers criticized Aiken’s move, saying “apparently his performing career isn’t going so well and he’s bored.
