Republicans Have Blocked 500 Bills
Click here for reuse options! The president, speaking at a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee event Wednesday evening hosted at Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn’s home, said Republicans have been obstructionist since even before he took office.
“Their willingness to say no to everything — the fact that since 2007, they have filibustered about 500 pieces of legislation that would help the middle class just gives you a sense of how opposed they are to any progress — has actually led to an increase in cynicism and discouragement among the people who were counting on us to fight for them,” Obama said of Republicans.
“The conclusion is, well, nothing works,” the president continued. “And the problem is, is that for the folks worth fighting for — for the person who’s cleaning up that house or hotel, for the guy who used to work on construction but now has been laid off — they need us. Not because they want a handout, but because they know that government can serve an important function in unleashing the power of our private sector.”

And how many bills has Reid prevented from taking a vote on the Senate floor?
arc99 May 8th, 2014 at 12:25
until you provide a reputable reference to back up your rhetorical question, the answer is none.
bahlers May 8th, 2014 at 12:38
It was not a rhetorical question, I was wondering if anyone knows the answer to the question that I posed. thehill.com found 290 bills blocked by Reid in the first couple years of Obama’s Presidency.
arc99 May 8th, 2014 at 12:57
so the question is, how many of those bills are being blocked via the “silent filibuster” as noted in this letter from House Democrats, and who is doing the blocking. to state that Sen. Reid is unilaterally blocking these bills does not appear to be an accurate assessment of what is happening.

Whatever the number, and it’s nowhere near what republicans have blocked, the bills blocked were filled with cuts to the middle class and giving the rich even more. Republicans write bills knowing they won’t pass so they can say…’See, Obama won’t pass anything.” …knowing people don’t know what’s even in the bills.
GodhasblessedAmericawhydenyHim May 8th, 2014 at 17:08
Why is it the rich have only gotten richer and the rest of America suffered under this Administration? Because it’s NOT about helping the middle class, it’s about it’s destruction and as they are the biggest threat to the DemocRats.
lindsncal May 8th, 2014 at 17:47
The rich keep getting richer because of republican policies that congress refuses to change. Obama has tried and congress won’t do a damn thing about it. Republicans signed a pact on the day Obama took office to not allow him to pass anything no matter what it was because they knew if things got better, they’d lose.
Obama can’t spend a nickel to do anything without congress approval and they won’t let hm.
Look at any chart you can find. Our economic demise and wealth disparity started with Reagan and grew to absurdity under bush.

Reid blocked the Republican jobs bill for one but they are sitting on a total of 290! What difference does it make, our POTUS is acting more like a dictator than a US President.
lindsncal May 8th, 2014 at 17:39
Are you kidding me? Did you read that jobs bill? The knew it didn’t have a chance when they wrote it. Your tax money going to waste as usual.
It was projected to be rejected by about 95% of the people.
Hah…’dictator’ A dictator is one like putin who republicans love.
Please, explain your ridiculous claim of Obama being a dictator.

So Republicans aren’t interested in the middle, and lower class civilians. I can’t believe some middle and lower income civilians even vote for Republicans, so what are they thinking? Vote Republicans out they’ve clearly done enough damage for another 50 years.

Republicans base their fight against minimum wage based on
this pathetic graph that is worthless,
http://www.cbo.gov/publication/44995
Meanwhile in Australia,
and Denmark their minimum
wage is over $16 dollars per hour in Australia,
and $21 dollars per hour in Denmark.
They still have the dollar menu, and are given free healthcare, and free
education (including college) paid for with income taxes, and sales tax that
are equal to the US,
or less than if any at all.
You can thank the millionaires
running Congress for that. They seem pretty adamant with pro business, but anti
workforce policies, refusing minimum wage increases, refusing free universal
healthcare, or free education for American families, and keeping taxes to 5% to
.1% for millionaires, and billionaires. While taxing the working class 30-45%
in taxes, which is much higher than most countries. In other countries taxes
for people making under 60K per year is merely 20%, and sales tax is identical
to US taxes if any taxes at all. Then those same countries have a no cost to
individual tax payer free universal healthcare, and universal educational
system (including college paid for with taxes). I’ll provide some sources you
can make your own opinion, and it’ll either make you sick, or make you mad, but
either way it’ll change your perspective on the US.

^Denmark Mcd’s employees making $21 dollars per hour while a bigmac is only
14 percent more or .14 cent for every dollar more than in America, which is
basically nothing.
http://inequality.org/minimum-wage/
Why minimum wage should be over $20 dollars per hour in the US.^
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_minimum_wages_by_country
I’ve only listed income taxes, but sales tax etc is nearly identical at
around 5-15% roughly if any at all.
FMW means Federal minimum wage
Australia
Largely a pro workforce, and family oriented country
FMW $16.87 per hour
https://mcdonalds.com.au/menu/loose-change-menu
The dollar menu at Mcd’s in Australia
above proving a minimum wage increase doesn’t affect prices.^
Canada
Largely a pro workforce, and family oriented country
FMW is $10.20/hr
Taxes 15% at $43953 then 22% at 87k then 26% at 134 k
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/ndvdls/fq/txrts-eng.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/_in_Canada
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_Canada
UK
Largely a pro workforce, and family oriented country
FMW $10.26/hr
Taxes 20% for those who make less than 60k per year
Taxes 40% for 60 k per year to 45% with 300k per year

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Health_Service
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_England
France
Largely a pro workforce, and family oriented country
FMW $12.22/hr
France
if you make less than 60k per year you pay 20% in taxes
If you make over 130k it’s 30% continues on the more you make the more you
pay

Most countries actually have 5 weeks minimum required
paid vacation by law unlike the US^
All above countries have free universal healthcare, and free universal
education nearly identical. (France
includes nannies that do laundry, and cook). (in comparison to the US it
is completely free)
United States of America
Largely a pro business, and for profit country.
FMW $7.25/hr
Taxes 30-45% for those making 15k-60k per year those who make over 200k
10-25% the more you make the less you pay down to .5% (half of one percent)
(for even billionaires).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxation_in_the_United_States
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_tax_rates
No free healthcare, or free educational system. Healthcare facilities drops
people off around the corner who can’t pay. Something free in a universal
healthcare, or educational system in another country costs 1k-100k, or more in
the US.
