As I mentioned earlier today, President Obama is entering rare historical territory with two majority victories. It is now a question of whether he will be a significant President like Eisenhower or a “transformative President like Reagan (as Obama himself described him).  Plenty of speculation on the web.  Jonathan Cohn aims high

But, whatever happens over the next four years, Obama’s reelection guarantees that the laws passed during his first term stay on the books. That instantly makes him one of the most accomplished presidents of modern times. Already Obama and his allies have shaped this country in ways that will last for generations—making life more secure, and creating new opportunities, for tens of millions of Americans.

…as does Charles Pierce:

As he enters his final term, with the elegiac music playing out there in the distance, Barack Obama will use the history that he has come to embody and, perhaps, even to fulfill, as part of a larger project that never will be completed but only finished, over and over again.

Putting aside the mundane details of politics, last night’s result is nearly as historic as the one four years ago.
