Gore Vidal, who died this week at 86, faced off with the late William F. Buckley, Jr. during the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago. It got ugly when Buckley compared Vietnam war opponents to Nazi appeasers:

Vidal: The only pro- or crypto-Nazi I can think of is yourself…

Buckley: Now listen you queer, quit calling me a crypto-Nazi or I’ll sock you in the goddamn face and you’ll stay plastered.
