The Supreme Court has upheld the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Basically. the justices said that the individual mandate — the requirement that most Americans buy health insurance or pay a fine — is constitutional as a tax.

Chief Justice John Roberts — a conservative appointed by President George W. Bush — provided the key vote to preserve the landmark health care law…

It was a 5-4 decision, with Chief Justice John Roberts joining the court’s left flank, and avoiding a thorny issue by declaring the mandate a tax.

The decision allows Roberts — whose legacy will depend in large part on this case — to avoid the severe reprecussions that both sides of the case had feared. The court did not strike down the signature domestic acheivement of a sitting president, nor did it give its approval to an expansion of Congress’ powers to regulate commerce.
