Virginia Governor Signs Bill Mandating Ultrasounds For Women Seeking Abortions

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell signed legislation forcing women to get ultrasounds if they choose abortion.

Under Virginia’s measure, a woman would be required to undergo a transabdominal ultrasound at least 24 hours before having an abortion to determine the gestational age. If the information cannot be found that way, the woman would be offered a vaginal ultrasound, and may refuse.

The woman would be given the opportunity to view the image, receive a printed copy and hear the fetal heart beat. A printed copy of the image would be kept in the medical record for at least seven years.

House Bill 462, sponsored by Del. Kathy J. Byron, R-Campbell, exempts women who are victims of rape or incest if they reported the attack to law enforcement, a provision that anti-domestic violence advocates say “adds insult to injury for victims of sexual assault.”
