Obama Favors Big Step Toward Elimination Of Nuclear Weapons

The Obama administration is considering options that could reduce our deployed nuclear weapons by 80%.

…the plan is in line with President Barack Obama’s 2009 pledge to pursue the elimination of nuclear weapons.

No decision has been made, but the administration is considering at least three options for lower numbers of deployed strategic nuclear weapons, cutting to: 1,000 to 1,100; 700 to 800, and 300 to 400, according to a former government official and a congressional staffer.

Republican presidential candidates all reject lower nuclear weapons and oppose the New Start treaty that would reduce our arsenal to 1550 warheads. But there is good data to indicate reduction is preferable.

Stephen Young, senior analyst at the Union of Concerned Scientists, which favors nuclear arms reductions, said Tuesday: “The administration is absolutely correct to look at deep cuts like this. The United States does not rely on nuclear weapons as a central part of our security.”
