Ohio Passes Most Radical Anti-Abortion Bill In The U.S.

It’s called the “heartbeat bill” because it declares a fetus a person the moment there’s a heartbeat and, at that moment, abortion is illegal.

Abortion-rights groups say such a law would effectively ban abortions entirely because most women don’t know they are pregnant that early in their pregnancy.

“It’s obviously an undue burden if you can’t have an abortion even before you know you are pregnant,” said Kellie Copeland, executive director of NARAL Ohio.

The legislation has raised concern from both sides of the abortion debate, including Ohio Right to Life, which has cautioned lawmakers that such a law is likely to be found unconstitutional because it would be too restrictive under current law.

More anti-abortion bills are being voted on in Ohio in an obvious attempt to chip away with what was deemed legal with the passage of Roe V. Wade. It is unlikely these measures can stand a constitutional test.
