In the department of “Huh?”, hours after declaring on Sunday that he expects to extend the anticipation of his expected announcement to run for president, Newt Gingrich said he’s worried that the United States could become “a secular atheist country, potentially one dominated by radical Islamists.”  Come again?

Gingrich, who has recently been caught flipflopping over the span of several days on issues like Libya and his marital fidelity, managed to pull off a political salchow of flip flopping in one sentence!

Saying you fear secular atheism dominated by radical Islamists is like, uh… saying you want a president who will demagogue about “protecting” the institution of marriage from monogamous gay couples while maintaining your own addiction to philandering and divorce.

Never mind the substantive absurdity and blatant fear mongering of suggestion that either atheists or radical Islamists are somehow taking over America, a point obviously meant to imply that the possibly-Muslim President Obama is destroying our “Christian nation” as we know it.

America has always been a nation of religious pluralism and tolerance.  That was why the United States was founded.  Want to run for president, Newt?  Read the Constitution and brush up on the history of the country you aspire to lead.
