Former Delaware Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell is the subject of a federal investigation to determine whether she used campaign money for personal expenses, reports the Associated Press, according to a source with knowledge of the probe.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity to protect the identity of a client who has been questioned in the probe. The case, which has been assigned to two federal prosecutors and two FBI agents in Delaware, has not been sent to a grand jury.

O’Donnell’s expenses have been questioned in the past by the group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, which branded her a criminal and called for a federal investigation.

By misusing campaign funds, Ms. O’Donnell committed the crime of conversion; by lying about her expenditures on forms she filed with the FEC, she committed false statements; and by failing to include the campaign funds she misappropriated as income, she committed tax evasion.

“Christine O’Donnell is clearly a criminal, and like any crook she should be prosecuted,” said Melanie Sloan, CREW Executive Director. “Ms. O’Donnell has spent years embezzling money from her campaign to cover her personal expenses.
