Eric Cantor Decides We Shouldn’t Speak With One Voice On Foreign Policy

If a Democratic Member of Congress promised a foreign leader he or she would side with that leader against a Republican president, can you imagine the hell that would break loose? When the administration criticized Israel for settlements in East Jerusalem, Republicans were critical. In a highly unusual one-on-one meeting between a sitting congressman of the president’s opposing party and a foreign leader, incoming Majority Leader Eric Cantor promised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Republicans would be a check on the president’s Israel policy. “Eric stressed that the new Republican majority will serve as a check on the Administration and what has been, up until this point, one party rule in Washington,” the readout continued. “He made clear that the Republican majority understands the special relationship between Israel and the United States, and that the security of each nation is reliant upon the other.”

Veteran observer of U.S.-Israeli relations Ron Kampeas said he found that statement “an eyebrow-raiser.”

“I can’t remember an opposition leader telling a foreign leader, in a personal meeting, that he would side, as a policy, with that leader against the president,” Kampeas wrote…

Israel agreed to freeze settlements in 2003 as part of the road map to peace, but has not honored that agreement.
