Lady Gaga decided to engage in a little political activism  in a video message sent out to her fans. Gaga urges her supporters to call their senators and pressure them to repeal ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’. The video specifically calls out John McCain of Arizona, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, James Inhofe of Oklahoma, and Jeff Sessions of Alabama as particularly vocal opponents of DADT. The response thus far from Washington has been as comical as expected.

One of Gaga’s New York Senators, Kirsten Gillibrand,  took to her Twitter account to thank Gaga for her phone call and ask if she had time to “talk later today” about the issue (just vote yes…). I’m betting Gillibrand is just trying to get Lady Gaga’s autograph. John McCain, on the other hand responded to Gaga by telling KFYI Phoenix

“I’m glad she’s paying attention. “I hope she’ll continue to pay attention, and to watch the debates on the Senate floor, and understand that this is a pure political ploy on the part of [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid and Democrats who see their majority slipping away.”

Judging from his statement on KFYI, there is approximately a 0.00% chance that John McCain knows who Lady Gaga is. There is no doubt after watching her video that Gaga clearly has been following this issue closely, but the idea that she would care at all whether the Democrats are trying to use DADT as a “political ploy” before the midterm elections is amusing and ridiculous. Senator McCain, just vote yes and Lady Gaga (along with every other Constitution-loving American in this country) will stop attacking you and the other Republicans for not believing that the life of every soldier ought to be valued the same.
