GOP Will Run Promoting Anti-Muslim Sentiment

The GOP’s decision to make opposition to an Islamic Center near Ground Zero a campaign issue means they’ll be running for office against the concept of freedom of religion. Specifically, it’s President Obama’s support of the center that has Republicans frothing at the mouth.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), the recruitment chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, suggested the GOP might seek to capitalize on Obama’s decision to weigh in on the proposed ground zero mosque.

Of course, what is rarely mentioned is that the proposed structure is an Islamic center to educate people about one of the world’s most prominent religions, one that will contain a mosque as part of a much larger presentation.  And it is two blocks north of where the World Trade Center was, not far from other New York City mosques.  In other words, this is an invented issue for political purposes, playing on anti-Muslim sentiment and the fear that creates in order to gain traction for Republicans.
