As tensions rise in the Korean Peninsula after the sinking of the Cheonan, a South Korean battleship four months ago, the North Korean dictatorship is responding the only way it knows how: by making threats. During the Asian security forum in Vietnam today a North Korean spokesman, Ri Tong-il,  threatened a “physical response” to planned military exercises by the United States and South Korea this weekend. What exactly that “physical response” will be was not specified, although the sinking of the Cheonan should give some idea. Of course if you ask Ri Tong-il the cause of the sinking “remains unclear” and a joint investigation should be conducted. Someone should tell Ri Tong-il that making threats does not help his country’s case with the rest of the world community. Let’s hope for everyone’s sake this tension does not escalate to war, as two are more than enough for the time being.
