The president gives his first prime-time Oval Office speech tonight. Is this the moment to turn the tide on finally moving forward on climate change and energy legislation? And is he going to be blamed for using a disaster to push an agenda? Greg Sargent rounds up the speculation.

  • It’s being widely reported that Obama will argue tonight that the spill demonstrates the need for reform, and he’s expected to call for legislation that’s “comprehensive.”
  • Aides also say that Obama will “talk about what we must do to decrease our dependence on oil and other fossil fuels.”

Minority Whip Eric Cantor has criticized the news conference that hasn’t happened yet, issuing this statement:

According to reports, President Obama will attempt to do with the oil spill precisely what he has done before: utilize a crisis to force the country to accept “comprehensive” reforms that people do not generally support.
