California state senator Roy Ashburn, who came out in March after being arrested for DUI following a visit to a gay bar, is coming out again–this time for gay rights. Ashburn took to the California senate floor to discuss legislation designed to to punish members of the clergy who would not perform gay marriages.

“On a personal note, before I speak to the bill, I would not have been speaking on a measure dealing with sexual orientation ever, prior to the events that have transpired in my life over the last three months,” Ashburn said. “However, I am no longer willing or able to remain silent on issues that affect sexual orientation, the rights of individuals and so I’m doing something that is quite different and foreign to me.”

Ashburn, who had an anti-gay voting record prior to going public about his sexual orientation, is also supporting a measure to overturn the military policy of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.”
