Carl Paladino, a Republican candidate for governor of New York who has tea party support, is being accused of sending out racist, graphic, emails.

The e-mails — posted this morning on the left-leaning Buffalo-area political blog WNYmedia.net — run the gamut from hardcore pornography to racist slights to President Obama. One titled “Obama Inaugural Rehearsal” and containing a video of African tribesman dancing drew a biting response from one of the recipients after it was sent in December 2008.

“It’s one thing not to like Obama’s policies. It’s another to be a flat-out racist,” the recipient wrote, according to the blog. “Hard to believe it’s 2008 and we’re still seeing this garbage from people.”

Paladino purportedly issued this reply at the time.

“To me it’s just humor,” Paladino said. “I’m not racist and have never related Obama’s color to my political taste for him.”

“I’m not ethnic sensitive to ethnic humor,” he continued. “dago, spic, polack whatever we hear the humor every day.”

Paladino’s campaign manager, Michael Caputo, is defending his candidate.

“Carl Paladino has forwarded close friends hundreds of e-mail messages he received,” Caputo said. Many of these e-mails he received were off color, some were politically incorrect, few represented his own opinion, and almost none of them were worth remembering.”

Doing more damage than damage control, Caputo also said:

“We’re not sure about the authenticity of the emails, and we don’t care,” said Paladino’s campaign manager, Mike Caputo. “i’m not even going to comment on the emails. It’s not something I care to look at…

“Let he who has never opened a graphic image on their internet cast the first stone.”
