Law enforcement officials are investigating whether Joseph Andrew Stack, the pilot who crashed his plane into an Austin office building, did so because of a beef with the IRS.

The officials said authorities are trying to determine if the pilot intentionally targeted nearby office space of the Internal Revenue Service. There are reports the pilot may have been disgruntled with the IRS.

As a precaution, the Colorado-based North American Aerospace Defense Command launched two F-16 aircraft from Houston’s Ellington Field, and is conducting an air patrol over the crash area.

It is believed that shortly before Stack crashed into the building, he set his home on fire.

Witnesses at an adjacent mall told KXAN-TV that the crash was clearly intentional. The plane came in low, and was at full throttle on impact, the witnesses said.

KXAN-TV reported that cops were at the scene of an earlier fire at a home owned by software engineer Joseph Stack. A neighbor rescued Stack’s wife, Austin musician Cheryl Stack, and their 12-year-old daughter.

Joseph Stack, who has a pilot’s license, is missing, KXAN-TV reported. The plane may have been stolen.
