Philly Cop Pulled Off Street Duty For Wearing Cornrows

Dozens of cops in Philadelphia wear cornrows. But they’re all black. Officer Thomas Strain wore them and was pulled off the street for desk duty. He’s white.

“It’s absolutely discriminatory,” said one officer. Strain’s cornrows ‘do “was neat. It was above his collar. It’s not like he shaved a Nazi sign or something anti-black or anti-Hispanic on his head. It’s just cornrows. I don’t know what the problem is.”

The problem, police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore said, is that Strain’s superior didn’t feel his cornrows were “professional.”

Police policy says officers have to have “clean, properly trimmed and combed hair” that doesn’t get in the way of wearing the uniform “in a military manner.  No word on why black members of the force are permitted this style, but not a white officer.
