Why Are Some Republicans Afraid To Say Sotomayor Is Not A Racist?

Newt Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh and Tom Tancredo have called Sonia Sotomayor “racist”, and Senator James Inofe (R-OK) has strongly implied it.  To his credit, Republican Texas Senator John Cornynhas repudiated these remarks, as have Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama and South Carolina’s Lindsey Graham. But there are other Republicans lack the will to renounce them; or they truly believe Sotomayor is racist and lack the courage to say so.

Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the highest ranking elected Republican in America, said he had better things to do than to renounce this kind of language, when asked about it by CNN’s John King (h/t Think Progress):

MCCONNELL: They’re certainly entitled to their opinions. … Look, I’ve got a big job to dealing with 40 senate Republicans and trying to advance a nation’s agenda. I’ve got better things to do than to be the speech police over people who are going to have their views about a very important appointment.

And Texas Senator John Kyl refused to renounce racist claims against Sotomayor when asked about it by Bob Schieffer on CBS.
