Why Conservatives Are Whining About Miss California Not Winning Miss USA

Miss California, Carrie Prejean, was asked if she favors gay marriage during the Miss USA competition, and her answer upset those who favor gay marriage, and has conservatives questioning whether what she said cost her the crown.

When asked by judge Perez Hilton, an openly gay gossip blogger, whether she believed in gay marriage, Miss California, Carrie Prejean, said “We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.”

A shouting match ensued in the lobby after the competition.

“It’s ugly,” said Scott Ihrig, a gay man, who attended the pageant with his partner. “I think it’s ridiculous that she got first runner-up. That is not the value of 95 percent of the people in this audience. Look around this audience and tell me how many gay men there are.”

Charmaine Koonce, the mother of Miss New Mexico USA Bianca Matamoros-Koonce, argued back.

“In the Bible it says marriage is between Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve!”

Prejean’s answer is a bit confusing. She first says, “We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage.”  But she then says, “In my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman.”

Perez Hilton has this to say on his website:

Miss California has been dating Michael Phelps on and off since last year.

She’ll just take a hit from his peace pipe and this will all blow over soon enough for her!

The winner was Miss North Carolina, Kristen Dalton, who said if she had a time machine she’d like to visit the ’50s “because those were the golden years.”  (Well, okay, maybe not if you were black and wanted to drink from white water fountains, a woman who wanted the same opportunities as men, or gay and were even more likely to be closeted than you’d be now).
